Job description

Built for people who thrive onsite, not on Teams calls.
Tenova is hiring a Field Installation & Commissioning Supervisor to be the primary onsite technical leader for major industrial projects. You'll lead the installation, integration, commissioning, and start-up of mechanical, electrical, and automation systems, coordinating subcontractors and working directly with customers to deliver safe, high-quality results on schedule.
What you'll do
As Tenova's senior onsite representative, you will:
  • Serve as the primary onsite contact for mechanical, electrical, and automation installation and commissioning activities.
  • Lead the installation of Tenova-supplied mechanical equipment, electrical systems, instrumentation, automation hardware, and control systems.
  • Coordinate mechanical assembly, alignment, piping interfaces, electrical installation, cable routing, terminations, MCCs, cabinets, remote I/O, instrumentation, and industrial communication networks.
  • Interpret mechanical, electrical, P&ID, instrumentation, and automation drawings while verifying field execution and maintaining redlines/as-built documentation.
  • Establish work sequences and priorities to complete the project safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
  • Coordinate, direct, and monitor mechanical, electrical, and automation subcontractors and site manpower, including turnkey subcontractors where applicable.
  • Ensure all work complies with Tenova procedures, ISO standards, OSHA requirements, customer specifications, and applicable industry standards.
  • Lead commissioning and start-up activities, including:
    • Mechanical inspections and equipment readiness
    • Equipment alignment and functional verification
    • Loop checks and instrument calibration
    • I/O validation
    • PLC/HMI integration support
    • MCC and VFD start-up
    • Industrial network verification
    • Process commissioning and performance testing
  • Coordinate mechanical and electrical interfaces to ensure successful equipment integration.
  • Manage NCRs, field changes, and corrective actions in alignment with the Project Manager and Director of Project Services.
  • Interface directly with customer construction, maintenance, operations, and commissioning teams while providing clear reporting on progress, risks, and corrective actions.
  • Drive punch-list completion, project closeout, turnover documentation, and final acceptance.
  • Coordinate with Project Management and Home Office Engineering to resolve technical issues and minimize schedule or cost impacts.
  • Mentor and coach Field Service Engineers, Field Electrical Engineers, Automation Engineers, and technicians.

Travel & mobility (important)
  • Approximately 80% travel, often in extended rotations at domestic and international job sites.
  • You can live anywhere in the U.S., but must be within reasonable driving distance of a major airport.
  • Must be fully available to travel frequently by car and/or plane.

What we're looking for
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline. Equivalent field experience will also be considered.
  • Approximately 5-14+ years of industrial field installation, commissioning, or start-up experience with demonstrated site leadership progression.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical equipment installation, electrical construction, and industrial automation systems in heavy industrial environments.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary field activities involving mechanical, electrical, and automation scopes.
  • Proven ability to lead subcontractors and manage productivity, sequencing, quality, safety, and project schedules.
  • Ability to evaluate field instructions, technical issues, and contractor claims while supporting effective resolutions.
  • Excellent customer-facing communication, leadership, and reporting skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, P&IDs, instrumentation diagrams, and control system documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills during installation and commissioning.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office for site reporting.

Nice to have
  • AutoCAD redlines/as-built documentation.
  • PLC platforms such as Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, or Schneider.
  • HMI/SCADA familiarity.
  • Industrial communication networks (Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, or similar).
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary commissioning teams.
  • Experience in steel mills, metals processing, reheating furnaces, heat treatment, cold rolling, electric arc furnaces, or other heavy industrial facilities.

Salary: $110,000 - $125,000 per year, depending on experience and location.
Comp Time: Eligible Field Service Engineers/Supervisors earn 1 hour of paid compensatory time for each hour worked over 40 in a week, subject to supervisor approval, to use during downtime between projects.
