A Tennis Graduate Assistant (GA) is a position for graduate students who assist a college or university tennis program while pursuing their degree. Responsibilities typically include helping with coaching, organizing practices, recruiting, administrative tasks, and sometimes stringing racquets or managing equipment. GAs often receive tuition assistance or a stipend in exchange for their work. This role provides valuable coaching experience and networking opportunities for those interested in a career in tennis or sports administration.
As a Tennis Graduate Assistant, your daily duties typically include assisting with team practices, helping develop training plans, supporting players with skill development, and coordinating match logistics. You may also be involved in video analysis, recruiting support, administrative tasks, and communicating with student-athletes about their academic and athletic progress. Additionally, you'll often collaborate with head coaches, athletic trainers, and other athletic department staff. This role provides a hands-on opportunity to learn about collegiate coaching while balancing your own graduate studies.
To thrive as a Tennis Graduate Assistant, candidates should have collegiate-level tennis experience, foundational coaching knowledge, and typically be enrolled in a graduate degree program. Familiarity with video analysis software, Microsoft Office Suite, and, in some programs, certifications such as CPR/AED or coaching accreditation is valuable. Strong organizational skills, effective communication, leadership, and the ability to build rapport with student-athletes set standout candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for managing coaching responsibilities, assisting with team logistics, and fostering athlete development within a collegiate sports environment.
