Job description
Primary Function
The Meteorological Instrumentation Technician, Junior performs routine operation, maintenance, sustainment, troubleshooting, and repair of fixed and mobile meteorological instrumentation systems in support of Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) and remote mission operations. This position works with moderate supervision and is expected to independently perform standard maintenance tasks while supporting senior technicians and engineers on more complex systems and mission-critical activities.
Essential Duties
Perform routine preventive and corrective maintenance on meteorological instrumentation systems to ensure mission readiness and data accuracy.
Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot systems including GPS radiosonde receiving stations, surface weather sensors, ASOS interfaces, ceilometers, lightning detection systems, wind measurement systems, and related equipment.
Support upper-air and surface observation operations, including preparation, launch, and recovery support for routine and special balloon soundings.
Assist with maintenance and sustainment of fixed and mobile meteorological systems at WFF and remote deployment locations.
Conduct inspections, basic calibrations, adjustments, and component replacements in accordance with approved procedures.
Identify system anomalies, document discrepancies, and recommend corrective actions to senior personnel.
Maintain accurate maintenance records, logs, and documentation in approved tracking systems.
Assist with system setup, teardown, and configuration for mobile or temporary meteorological deployments.
Follow all safety, quality, and environmental procedures while working around electrical systems, antennas, towers, and outdoor equipment.
Participate in required technical training, certification programs, and on-the-job training to advance technical proficiency.
Provide limited guidance to helpers or less experienced personnel as assigned.
Perform other related duties as required to support meteorological operations.
Supervisory Responsibilities
No formal supervisory responsibility.
May provide task-level guidance to Meteorological Instrumentation Technician Helpers.
Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Working knowledge of electronic, mechanical, or meteorological instrumentation systems.
Ability to troubleshoot and repair routine equipment malfunctions using schematics, manuals, and procedures.
Familiarity with surface and upper-air meteorological sensors and data collection principles.
Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and standard test equipment.
Basic computer proficiency for data entry, maintenance tracking, and documentation.
Ability to read and follow technical instructions and safety requirements.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently on assigned tasks.
Effective verbal communication skills and ability to work as part of a technical team.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in electronics, instrumentation, meteorological systems, or related technical field preferred.
Military technical training or equivalent civilian experience highly desirable.
Valid driver's license with ability to operate government or company vehicles.
Ability to obtain and maintain required site access credentials.
Ability to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays as mission requirements dictate.
Ability to lift, carry, and install equipment in field and facility environments.
Working Environment
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors at WFF facilities, towers, antenna sites, and remote locations. The position involves exposure to weather conditions, electrical equipment, heights, and confined spaces. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
