Outdoor Classroom Nurse

Outdoor Classroom is looking for adventurous nurses to join our team this fall!

As the largest outdoor and environmental education program in the northeastern US, we focus on place-based education with an emphasis on science, nature, and social-emotional learning. We facilitate exciting outdoor learning experiences for elementary and middle school students who visit us for overnight field trips. Each spring and fall, we host hundreds of schools at our seven beautiful sites located across New England.

Outdoor Program Nurse (LPN/RN)

This is an exciting opportunity for a nurse who enjoys working outdoors and making a positive impact on the health and well-being of young learners. By joining the Outdoor Classroom team, you'll help create a safe, supportive environment where children can engage in nature-based educational programs, knowing that their health and safety are in capable hands. This is a seasonal position with on-site housing and meals provided for all employees at each of our beautiful locations, and we accept applicants from all over the country.

We are the largest outdoor and environmental education program in the northeastern US, specializing in experiential education with an emphasis on science, nature, and social-emotional learning. We offer fun and transformative programming for elementary and middle school students, who travel to us for overnight field trips. We host hundreds of schools each spring and fall at our 7 sites.

Responsibilities

As a nurse at Outdoor Classroom, your primary responsibility will be providing healthcare to elementary and middle school students participating in our multi-day programs. You will live on-site and be on-call 24 hours a day during student visits from Monday to Friday. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing healthcare tailored to individual student needs.
  • Responding to emergency situations. Properties range in size from 30 to 300 acres, and the nurse must be able to walk across uneven terrain to respond to an emergency.
  • Administering treatments, monitoring progress, and referring students to local medical professionals if required.
  • Adhering to health care policies and procedures outlined in the Healthcare Manual and local doctor-provided Standing Orders.
  • Creating a Medication Administration Record (MAR) for each school via Google Sheets and distributing medications as prescribed.
  • Collaborating with teaching staff to ensure emergency medications are readily available during activities.
  • Maintaining accurate, detailed medical records in compliance with state requirements.
  • Communicating with school nurses and students' families to address questions regarding medications, medical history, and/or allergies.
  • Managing inventory and ordering supplies in coordination with the Health & Wellness Director.

Dates of Employment - Seasonal

This is a seasonal, temporary position for the fall. The season begins approximately 1.5 weeks before students start arriving, which allows time for training, health center setup, and coordination of supplies with the Health and Wellness Director. Staff training starts on August 31. The season ends either in November 20.

Salary & Benefits

  • Weekly rate: $1,375-$1,500
  • Mileage reimbursement for work-related travel.
  • Shared housing is provided for the duration of the season. (Family housing is not available. Pets or emotional support animals are not allowed.)
  • Meals are provided by the dining hall when schools are on-site.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid RN or LPN/LVN license
  • Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to live on-site.
  • Experience creating and editing Google Sheets and Documents.
  • Endurance to address emergency needs. Ability to walk to an emergency happening across property in a timely manner, including walking over uneven terrain for up to a mile.
  • Willingness and ability to get up during overnight hours to respond to emergency calls.
  • Proficiency in reading and following medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent letters.
  • Ability to obtain licenses in MA

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience working with children, either as a nurse or in another setting.
  • Reliable vehicle.
  • Team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize
