What is a temporary underground utility worker?

Temporary Underground Utility workers are professionals hired on a short-term basis to assist with the installation, maintenance, or repair of underground utility systems such as water, gas, electric, or telecommunications lines. They often work with construction teams to locate existing utilities, dig trenches, lay pipes or cables, and ensure safety standards are met. These workers may also help restore surfaces after the work is completed and are crucial for infrastructure projects that require additional workforce for specific durations. Their roles can vary depending on the employer and the nature of the project, but safety and efficiency are always top priorities.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a temporary underground utility worker?

To thrive as a Temporary Underground Utility worker, you need basic construction knowledge, physical stamina, and familiarity with underground utility installation, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience with utility locating equipment, trenchers, and safety certifications such as OSHA 10 are typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong communication skills help ensure safe and efficient operations on site. These skills are essential for maintaining safety standards, preventing service disruptions, and contributing to successful project completion.

What are common challenges faced by temporary underground utility workers, and how can I prepare for them?

Temporary Underground Utility workers often encounter challenges such as working in varying weather conditions, adhering to strict safety protocols, and coordinating with multiple teams on-site. It's important to be adaptable, detail-oriented, and proactive in communicating with supervisors and crew members. Familiarizing yourself with safety procedures, proper use of equipment, and understanding utility maps can help you succeed and stay safe in this fast-paced environment.

Job description

HIRING NOW: Heavy Equipment Operators & Foreman – Up to $45/hr – Columbus, Cincinnati & Dayton, OH

Direct Hire from Day 1 | Relocation Assistance Up to $7,500 | Full Benefits Day 1 | No CDL Required

We are hiring Heavy Equipment Operators and a Foreman to join underground utility and telecom construction crews across Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton, Ohio — including work supporting major data center infrastructure projects. These are direct hire positions, not temp and not contract, with pay and benefits starting immediately.

Pay:

  • Foreman (4–10+ years experience): $40–$45/hr
  • Operator, Level II & III (3–5 years experience): $37–$42/hr

Why You'll Want This Job:

  • Direct hire — you're a full employee from day one, not a temp
  • Relocation assistance paid: $5,000–$7,500
  • Medical, Dental & Vision start Day 1 — employer-paid at 80%
  • 10 paid holidays per year
  • PTO: 80–120 hours
  • Company truck, home-garaged for Foreman
  • No CDL required to apply

What You'll Do:

  • Operate heavy equipment on underground utility and telecom construction projects
  • Install conduit and manholes for telecom and data center infrastructure
  • Dig deep excavations — 12 to 15 feet — safely around live/active utilities
  • Work with trench boxes; double-stack trench box experience is a big plus
  • Read site plans, grade stakes, and utility markings
  • Foreman: lead a crew, manage daily production, and keep the site safe

Who We're Looking For:

Foreman:

  • 4–10+ years of experience in utility or telecom construction
  • Proven experience leading a crew on excavation or underground utility jobs

Operators (Level II & III):

  • 3–5 years running heavy equipment, ideally large track excavators with long-arm attachments
  • Deep excavation experience (12'+) preferred

Great backgrounds for either role:

  • Utilities, telecom, gas, water, or municipal construction experience
  • Double-stack trench box experience
  • Data center construction experience
  • Willing and able to relocate to Columbus, Cincinnati, or Dayton, OH
