The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician - Specialty 2 for the Cataract Suite in Miami, Florida.

The Ophthalmic Technician - Specialty 2 (H) independently performs a broad range of advanced ophthalmic diagnostic and specialty procedures. This role demonstrates applied expertise in specialty equipment, complex testing, and procedural workflows, contributing to efficient patient throughput and high-quality clinical outcomes. Specialty focus areas are defined by the department

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Independently performs advanced ophthalmic diagnostic tests or specialty procedures appropriate to the

  • assigned clinical area.

  • Applies advanced technical knowledge to obtain accurate, reliable results using ophthalmic and

  • specialtyspecific equipment.

  • Supports complex patient care activities, including procedural preparation, intraprocedure assistance, and

  • postprocedure processes as applicable.

  • Provides patient education related to diagnostic testing, treatments, and followup care.

  • Reviews results for quality and completeness and communicates findings to providers per protocol.

  • Performs routine equipment calibration, troubleshooting, and workflow optimization within scope.

  • Coordinates closely with providers and clinical teams to support efficient scheduling and patient flow.

  • Maintains accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the EMR.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent

Required Certification and Licensing:
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Experience:
4 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skill, and Attitudes:
Works well with patients of all age groups.
Presents with a professional appearance.
Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills.
Analyzes, organizes, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Completes assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
Seeks instruction in areas that require additional knowledge.
Works independently and in a collaborative environment.
Displays intermediate knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility.
Exhibits ability to perform the appropriate patient workup using EMR telehealth platform.
Demonstrates competency in all ophthalmic subspecialty patient workups.
Prepares patients for intravitreal injections.
Ability to function as an ophthalmic scribe.
Proficient in Microsoft Office

Department Addendum

Clinical:

  • Preforms all refractive evaluations including:

  • Documenting patients' medical history

  • Test patients' visual acuity

  • Depth perception

  • Color perception

  • Conduct a Retinoscopy Refraction, manifest and cycloplegic

  • Perform tonometry and slit lamp assessments

  • Measures intraocular pressure of eyes

  • Measures axial length of eye using ultrasound equipment

  • Performs other tests and measurements as requested by physician i.e., PAM, Topography

  • Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate or medicate eyes

  • Educate patient on cataract and cataract elective procedures

  • Collaborates on refractive clinical flow with administrative team and providers

  • Educate patients on pre- and post-operative instructions

  • Preform specialized imaging tests for patients

  • Order and maintain clinical supplies
