Job description

Job Summary
Standardized Patients (SP) are trained to accurately and consistently recreate the history, personality, physical findings, and emotional structure and response pattern of an actual patient at a particular point in time; assess/document learner performance; provide individualized feedback on interpersonal skills as indicated; and represent patient satisfaction. In this capacity, an SP will be interviewed and physically examined by learners or health professionals in the same manner that would occur if they were an actual patient. Additional training is provided to select SPs to provide individualized feedback on interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities*
Responsibilities include simulating a human patient case, and with guidance from the School of Nursing Center for Simulation and Clinical Innovation faculty providing feedback for health providers at multiple levels (undergraduate, post graduate and practicing providers) related only to their interpersonal communication skills. Additional responsibilities include responding to email messages promptly, demonstrating professional behavior and accountability for actions, working as a team and keeping commitments to the program.
Major Duties/Critical Tasks:
  • Simulate all aspects of the patient scenario, including history of current problem, affect/behavior and physical findings in a standardized, accurate and reliable manner
  • Under the direction of Center's faculty, provide written and face-to-face verbal feedback to learners when indicated.
  • Monitor other Standardized Patients for quality assurance.
  • Accept ongoing feedback from supervisor and incorporate that feedback into case simulation.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of learners and simulation-based learning experiences.
  • Participates in scenario testing and development as indicated prior to simulation based learning experience.

Personal and Professional Skills:
  • Comfort with their own body and examinations by health professions student(s).
  • Possess the ability to work well with a variety of people
  • Capacity for flexibility and adaptability in different work situations and hours.
  • Ability to recall an encounter accurately for the completion of checklists and written materials during practice sessions and assessments where learner is receiving feedback.
  • Lack of bias towards the healthcare system.
  • Punctuality and reliability in attendance.

Required Qualifications*
Required Education/Experience:
Must have already obtained at least one of the following:
  • Specialized Standardized Patient training through the Association of SP Educators (ASPE).
  • Are a current Standardized Patient Tier 1 in the School of Nursing Center for Simulation and
    Clinical Innovation with over 120 hours of documented SP scenario experience.
  • Are a current Standardized Patient through an approved Standardized Patient program.
  • Hold two (2) or more years of theatre performance experience.

Preferred Training:
  • Hold two (2) or more years of healthcare theatre experience is highly preferred.

Standardized Patients will be recorded for teaching and assessment purposes. Existing health problems may or may not determine the cases and situations an SP will be trained to portray.
Modes of Work
Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
