Job description

Position Summary The Park Maintenance Supervisor plans, coordinates and reviews the daily activities of the park maintenance crews to ensure that park and recreational services are efficiently delivered to the community. This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing. Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations Education / higher education: AA Degree or equivalent For required college degrees, applicable field(s) of study: Parks management, landscape architecture, turf management or related field.

Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Four years directly related experience and/or training. In lieu of a degree, incumbent must possess six years of relevant experience. Education and/or experience preferences: Other public pesticide applicators licenses.

Driver's License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: None Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards. Required certifications, licenses or registrations: None. Time given after hire/promotion to obtain certification or licenses: N/A Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: Public Pesticide/Herbicide License or other public pesticide applicator licenses.

Rio Rancho Backflow Tester Certification. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge: Parks and recreation principles and practices related to landscaping and turf management. Skills: Must be able to type rapidly and accurately enough to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position.

Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Operate a personal computer using word processing and spreadsheet software applications. Abilities: Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Write routine reports and correspondence. Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.

Use math concepts to present data in charts, graphs, and presentations. Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with other department supervisors, managers and directors on routine assignments and special projects. Maintains harmonious, courteous, and understanding relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment.

External: Works with contractors and the general public on parks maintenance issues and resolves complaints. Presents a friendly, courteous image for the City to the general public, customers, and public officials. Works with state forestry and other volunteers groups on bosque restoration.

Works with department of agriculture on compliance and license requirements. Works with playground auditors on playgrounds, vendors, engineers and architects. Essential Functions The following functions are typical for this position.

The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned. Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites workflow.

Studies and standardizes procedures to improve department and employee productivity. Prepares composite reports from individual reports of subordinates for submission to senior management. Works with subordinates to address errors, omissions, and complaints in order to maintain effective customer relations.

Assists subordinates in performing their duties and provides training and education. Assists in analyzing job-incurred injuries and equipment accidents and recommends changes to prevent safety hazards to the general public. Compiles and prepares budget reports, time sheets, checklists, work orders and cost estimates of materials, supplies and labor hours, pesticide reports and vandalism reports.

Plans, supervises and coordinates all operations of recreation facilities, playgrounds, open space, and sports complexes. Plans and directs the irrigating, mowing and fertilizing of the parks and City property. Plans and directs the preventative maintenance and minor repair of park vehicles and landscape maintenance equipment.

Plans and directs the operations of tree, sod and turf nurseries for the replacement and reconstruction of municipal parks. Supervises resource management work crews and individual staff and participates in employee evaluations and recommendations on hiring, termination or disciplinary actions. Assists with special events.

Assists other departments/divisions when possible, and on occasion with DPS/dispatch call-outs. Constructs and installs memorial tree plaques. Assists with ceremony.

Removes snow piles during inclement weather at City facility parking lots/sidewalks. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule to do so. Installs high tensile fencing.

Supervises Court-provided community service workers. Operates boom truck. Participates in the Sandoval County Disaster First Respond Team.

Supervises and maintains culverts and drainage ditches within park limits.
