What is a temporary software engineer?

A Temporary Software Engineer is a short-term position where an engineer is hired to work on software development projects for a limited period. These roles are often used to fill gaps in teams, handle increased workloads, or contribute to specific project phases. Temporary software engineers perform coding, debugging, testing, and other development tasks like permanent employees but without long-term commitments. Depending on company needs, these roles may last from a few weeks to several months.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a temporary software engineer?

A Temporary Software Engineer should have a strong background in programming languages, software development methodologies, and relevant degrees or certifications, such as a bachelor's in computer science. Familiarity with tools like Git, project management platforms, and frameworks such as React, Angular, or .NET is often necessary. Excellent communication, adaptability, and time management skills help a candidate quickly integrate into teams and contribute effectively to short-term projects. These competencies ensure a Temporary Software Engineer can deliver high-quality results within limited timelines and dynamic work environments.

What types of projects are temporary software engineers typically assigned to, and how do these assignments differ from permanent roles?

Temporary Software Engineers are usually brought on to support specific short-term projects, address skill gaps, or help meet approaching deadlines. They may work on software module development, bug fixes, system migrations, or assisting during peak workload periods. Unlike permanent staff, their assignments are often well-defined with clear objectives and limited durations, which means they are expected to quickly understand project requirements and make immediate contributions. Temporary roles can provide valuable exposure to diverse technologies and work environments, making them an excellent opportunity for broadening experience and building a professional network.

Job description

Job Title: Senior Software Engineer (Embedded Firmware & Connected Vehicles)
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced, visionary, and hands-on Senior Software Engineer to play a pivotal role in the design, development, testing, and release of advanced software-defined vehicle platforms and embedded firmware solutions. In this role, you will partner with skilled developers and cross-functional engineering teams to drive our digital and vehicle engineering roadmap from concept to production.
This is a senior technical leadership role combining low-level embedded firmware development with connected vehicle telematics and cloud architecture. You will design real-time controls for ECUs and TCUs, implement secure vehicle-to-cloud data pipelines, ensure compliance with functional safety standards (ISO 26262), and mentor junior engineering talent. If you are passionate about building cutting-edge mobility technologies and leading by example, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Embedded Firmware & Real-Time Controls
• Firmware Development: Design, code, test, and maintain real-time embedded firmware for automotive Electronic Control Units (ECUs), Telematics Control Units (TCUs), and microcontrollers.
• Low-Level Architecture: Implement device drivers, Hardware Abstraction Layers (HAL), bootloaders, and Board Support Packages (BSPs) across bare-metal, RTOS, FreeRTOS, and Linux environments.
• Bus Integration: Integrate complex automotive communication protocols including CAN, CAN-FD, LIN, Ethernet (100BASE-T1), and FlexRay.
• Functional Safety: Ensure software strictly complies with functional safety standards (ISO 26262 / ASIL) and coding guidelines (MISRA C/C++, AUTOSAR).
Connected Vehicle Platforms & Telematics
• V2X Pipelines: Architect and implement TCU software to handle secure vehicle-to-cloud (V2X/V2C) data pipelines utilizing LTE/5G, GPS/GNSS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi.
• IoT Messaging: Develop secure, lightweight IoT messaging protocols (e.g., MQTT, gRPC, Protobuf, HTTP/REST) for real-time vehicle telemetry and edge diagnostics.
• OTA & Edge Analytics: Architect reliable Over-The-Air (OTA) update systems with rollback capabilities and build edge data caching mechanisms to optimize cellular bandwidth.
Testing, Security & Leadership
• Cybersecurity: Implement robust security safeguards including Hardware Security Modules (HSM), Secure Boot, end-to-end encryption (TLS), and key management.
• Validation & Debugging: Utilize Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test beds, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and Vector tools (CANoe, CANalyzer) to debug low-level hardware/software interactions.
• Technical Mentorship: Lead from the front in Agile scrum ceremonies, mentor junior and offshore engineers, and foster a culture of innovation and engineering excellence.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent professional experience).
• Experience Baseline: Minimum of 8+ years of relevant experience in firmware and software development within automotive, mobility, logistics, or related hardware-software industries.
• Technical Mastery:
o5+ years of deep expertise in Embedded Firmware & Real-Time Controls (ECUs, TCUs, HAL, BSPs, RTOS, and CAN/Ethernet protocols).
o5+ years of hands-on experience in Connected Vehicle Platforms & Telematics (V2X pipelines, MQTT, OTA update systems, and edge telemetry).
o2+ years of specialized experience in automotive cybersecurity (HSM, Secure Boot) and hardware testing/debugging utilizing HIL test beds and Vector tools (CANoe).
oProven adherence to functional safety standards (ISO 26262 / ASIL) and coding standards (MISRA C/C++, AUTOSAR).
• Core Competencies: Strong communication skills to align cross-functional teams on complex architectural decisions; ability to "lead by doing" across coding, design, and execution; passion for mentoring and maximizing team potential.
