Job description

Duties: We are seeking a senior contractor to join our HR People Technology team on a retainer basis to design, build, and continuously improve AI-powered tools and automations across the HR function. This is a hands-on, delivery-focused role for someone who thrives on turning real HR pain points into working solutions - whether that's an intelligent onboarding workflow, an automated policy assistant, or a smart recruiting pipeline. You'll work closely with HR leadership and operational staff to scope, build, and iterate on impactful AI tools. Key Responsibilities AI Tool Development: Build and deploy production-ready AI-powered tools for HR use cases, including document processing, employee-facing chatbots, workflow automations, and decision-support systems. Process Automation: Identify manual or repetitive HR processes and engineer scalable automations using AI/ML, RPA, or integration platforms. Integration & Deployment: Connect AI tools with existing HR systems (HRIS, Workday ATS, ServiceNow ticketing, etc.), ensuring seamless data flow and user experience. Iteration & Maintenance: Continuously monitor, refine, and improve deployed tools based on user feedback and performance metrics. Technical Documentation: Produce clear technical documentation for all tools built, enabling internal teams to maintain and evolve solutions over time. Collaboration: Work directly with HR Operations staff to gather requirements, run pilots, and ensure adoption of new tools. Skills/ Required Qualifications: 6-10 years of experience in software engineering, HR technology, or AI/ML engineering, with a strong portfolio of delivered tools or automations Proficiency in one or more of the following: Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar languages used in automation and AI development Hands-on experience with LLM APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft) and prompt engineering for enterprise applications Experience with automation platforms such as Power Automate, Zapier, Make, or custom-built integration frameworks Solid understanding of HR workflows and the employee lifecycle Ability to independently scope, build, and ship tools with minimal oversight Preferred Qualifications Experience integrating AI tools with HRIS platforms (e.g., Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, BambooHR) Familiarity with HR data privacy requirements (GDPR, CCPA) as applied to AI systems Prior retainer or ongoing consulting engagements with HR or People Operations teams Experience with vector databases, RAG architectures, or knowledge management systems What Success Looks Like Within the first 90 days, the ideal contractor will have: Completed a technical discovery of current HR systems and automation opportunities Delivered at least two working AI tools or automations Established a backlog of prioritized build requests with the HR Operations team Documented all tools with clear handoff and maintenance guides.
