Job description

Overview

The Program in Visual Arts is looking to hire a part-time Ceramics and Sculpture Shop Assistant. This position will maintain the Ceramics area and provide technical support to Faculty and students, as well as provide some evening and class time support for students using the Sculpture Shop. This position reports to the Director of the Visual Arts Program and the Program Manager and works in concert with the Sculpture shop staff. 

This is a temporary position, with an hourly pay range of $20-$25, depending on experience.

Responsibilities

Ceramics Responsibilities:

The Ceramics and Sculpture Shop Assistant is primarily responsible for overseeing the Ceramics area, including: 

  • Oversight of the firing of the electric and gas kilns
  • In-class support for Faculty and students
  • Provides basic care of the Ceramics area
  • Maintains inventory of materials and supplies
  • Provides supply order requests, as needed 

Sculpture Shop Responsibilities:

Maintains a regular schedule of open Sculpture shop hours for use by students on evenings / weekends:

  • Supervises and supports students completing assigned course activities
  • Provides basic technical knowledge and oversight of shop tools, including woodworking tools: table saw, bandsaw, joiner, planer, drill press
  • Additional skills a plus: Metal working, welding, fibers/ soft sculpture
  • Ensures that shop equipment is operational, and if not, notifies the Sculpture Shop Supervisor
  • Keeps Sculpture shop in a clean and organized condition
  • Basic knowledge of spreadsheets, documentation platforms, apps
