Description
Essential Functions:
Verify and maintain records on incoming and outgoing shipments. Prepare items for shipment. Duties include assembling, addressing, stamping, and shipping merchandise or material; receiving, unpacking, verifying and recording incoming merchandise or material; and arranging for the transportation of products.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
  • Comply with plant safety procedures to ensure a safe environment.
  • Account for time and work completed via online computer data collection system.
  • Verifies and keeps records on incoming and outgoing shipments and prepares items for shipment: Compares identifying information and counts, weighs, or measures items of incoming and outgoing shipments to verify information against bills of lading, invoices, orders, or other records.
  • Determines method of shipment, utilizing knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates.
  • Affixes shipping labels on packed cartons or stencils identifying shipping information on cartons, using stenciling equipment.
  • Assembles wooden or cardboard containers or selects preassembled containers.
  • Inserts items into containers, using spacers, fillers, and protective padding.
  • Nails covers on wooden crates and binds containers with metal tape, using strapping machine.
  • Stamps, stencils, or glues identifying information and shipping instructions onto crates or containers.
  • Posts weights and shipping charges, and affixes postage.
  • Unpacks and examines incoming shipments, rejects damaged items, records shortages, and corresponds with shipper to rectify damages and shortages.
  • Routes items to departments.
  • Examines outgoing shipments to ensure shipments meet specifications.
  • Maintains inventory of shipping materials and supplies.
  • May operate tier-lift truck or use hand truck to move, convey, or hoist shipments from shipping-and-receiving platform to storage or work area.
  • May direct others in preparing outgoing and receiving incoming shipments.
  • May perform only shipping or receiving activities and be known as Shipping Clerk or Receiving Clerk.
  • May be designated according to specialty as Freight Clerk; Reshipping Clerk.
  • May receive damaged or defective goods returned to establishment and be designated Returned-Goods Receiving Clerk.
  • May receive unsold products returned by DRIVER, SALES ROUTE and be designated Route Returner.

Education:
  • High school Diploma or similar degree
  • GED

Requirements
Experience and Background:
  • Demonstrate competency in basic shop math.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and other shop drawing aids.
  • Flexible and responsive, with a strong teamwork orientation.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Desire to learn new skills and improve technical knowledge.
  • Commitment to quality and accuracy of work performed and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to participate in a cross-functional team.

Physical Requirements
