POSITION PURPOSE:
Performs all aspects of histological technical and clerical procedures for the aide of patient diagnosis. Some direction is provided by the Medical Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Makes scheduled rounds to pick up surgical specimens.
  • Records the receipt of specimens in the log and assigns identification number according to department protocol.
  • Refers any problem specimen to the area of the collection and informs the supervisor for follow-up action where necessary.
  • Prepares the tissue grossing area with appropriate materials and instruments.
  • Cleans workstation at the completion of grossing procedure ensures aseptic techniques and observes health safety protocols during the cleanup procedure to minimize risks to self and co-workers.
  • Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides.
  • Accessions histology/cytology specimens in the LIS; resolves specimen, label and/or order discrepancies. Retrieves previous reports from files/data base and prints logs utilizing the LIS. Request billing numbers for direct bill clients from Patient Registration. Ensures specimens for referred procedures and consultations are handled according to protocol.
  • Performs routine gross examinations and assists pathologists with examination of all surgically removed tissue, processes specimens in tissue processor, embeds, cuts, and mounts specimens on labeled slides within and outside department.
  • Performs routine and special stains and immunohistochemistry procedures including designated quality control; documents appropriately.
  • Maintains organized permanent histology slide and block file.
  • Proficient in operation, preventative maintenance and basic troubleshooting procedures for section, morgue, and frozen section room instrumentation and equipment; documents and takes action appropriately.
  • Assumes temporary responsibility for the section in the absence of Section Supervisor as assigned.
  • Assists in the training of department orientees and/or students as necessary.
  • Maintains competency of cross trained functions in Thin prep processing, cytology staining, cytology/pathology report distribution.
  • Perform other related duties, incidental to the work described herein, as directed by supervisor or director
SPECIALIZED KNOW-HOW & REQUIREMENTS:
  • Completion of an accredited Histology Technician program Required OR
  • Associates Degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited college/university which must include 24 science credit hours with at least 6 hours in Biology and 6 hours in Chemistry. Official transcript may be required to determine education equivalent.
  • Histology Certification through ASCP or equivalent required and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served on assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient population served. Able to assess and interpret data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's needs and provide the appropriate care, including age-related care, needed by the neonate, pediatric, adolescent and/or geriatric patient group.
