Job description

Description:

General Statement of Responsibilities: The Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care to Utah Cancer Specialists patients in accordance with established oncology standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements. This role is responsible for administering treatments, monitoring patient conditions, providing patient education, and supporting physicians and clinical staff in delivering high-quality patient care. The Registered Nurse works collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, medical assistants, and administrative staff to ensure safe and efficient clinic operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of chemotherapy and immunotherapy administration
  • Knowledge of clinical safety standards and infection control practices
  • Strong patient assessment and clinical decision-making skills

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide professional oncology nursing care to patients
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards
  • Mix, prepare, and administer chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments
  • Prepare equipment and assist physicians during examinations and treatments
  • Observe, record, and report patient conditions and reactions to medications and treatments
  • Perform patient triage and respond to patient phone calls as appropriate
  • Educate patients and families regarding medications, treatment plans, and care instructions
  • Maintain and review patient medical records and documentation
  • Post test and examination results and assist with appropriate documentation
  • Maintain exam rooms and treatment areas, ensuring proper supplies and cleanliness
  • Order and maintain medical supplies, medications, and treatment inventory
  • Maintain emergency kits and equipment, including IV pumps
  • Start and maintain IV lines and assess patient needs for central lines
  • Order and run lab tests while maintaining CLIA compliance
  • Maintain patient education materials and provide patient education
  • Serve as a clinical resource to Medical Assistants and other staff
  • Provide backup support to clinic staff as needed
  • Participate in professional development and continuing education activities
  • Assist in training and onboarding new employees
  • Participate in developing and maintaining drug inventory par levels
  • Attend required meetings and participate in committees as requested
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines
  • Adhere to OSHA policies and procedures
  • Adhere to USP 797 and USP 800 hazardous drug handling requirements
  • Follow all compliance and regulatory requirements
  • Perform related duties as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:

  • Full range of body motion including lifting and assisting patients
  • Prolonged standing and walking
  • Frequent bending, reaching, and lifting
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination required
  • Normal visual acuity and hearing required
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions and irregular hours as needed

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required
  • Minimum one year of nursing experience required
  • Oncology experience preferred
  • Infusion or chemotherapy experience preferred

Certificate and License Requirements:

  • Current State Registered Nurse License
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required
  • ONS Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy Certification required within one year of hire
  • OCN Certification preferred and expected once eligibility requirements are met

Work Environment:

Work is performed in a clinical oncology environment with frequent exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous drugs, and medical equipment. The role requires adherence to strict safety and handling guidelines and frequent interaction with patients undergoing cancer treatment.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines
  • Follow OSHA safety guidelines
  • Adhere to USP 797 and USP 800 hazardous drug handling requirements

Reporting Structure:

Reports to Physician for medical evaluation and treatment issues and to the Clinic Nurse Manager for operational and administrative matters.
