Temporary Residential Structural Engineer information

What is a temporary residential structural engineer?

Temporary Residential Structural Engineers are professionals hired on a short-term basis to assess, design, and ensure the structural integrity of residential buildings. They provide expertise for projects such as renovations, additions, repairs, or new constructions. Their responsibilities often include evaluating existing structures, preparing engineering drawings, and ensuring compliance with local building codes. Temporary positions are typically project-based, lasting only for the duration of a specific assignment. These engineers play a crucial role in maintaining safety and efficiency in residential construction projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary residential structural engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Residential Structural Engineer, you need a solid understanding of structural analysis, building codes, and residential construction, typically supported by a degree in civil or structural engineering and relevant licensure (e.g., P.E. or E.I.T.). Familiarity with structural design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SAP2000, as well as experience with inspection tools, is crucial. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient, and compliant residential structures, even within the constraints of a temporary assignment.

What are the typical challenges faced by a temporary residential structural engineer when joining a new project?

As a Temporary Residential Structural Engineer, you may encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to existing project workflows, familiarizing yourself with local building codes, and understanding site-specific constraints. You’ll often need to rapidly build rapport with a new team and efficiently assess project documentation to identify potential structural concerns. Effective communication and time management are key, as you’re expected to deliver high-quality engineering solutions within tight deadlines, often with limited onboarding time.

What is the difference between Temporary Residential Structural Engineer vs Structural Designer?

Employer & IndustryEngineering firms, construction companies, architectural firmsArchitectural firms, design consultancies, construction companies
Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

The Temporary Residential Structural Engineer focuses on on-site structural assessments and modifications for residential projects, often working temporarily on-site. In contrast, a Structural Designer primarily develops design plans and drawings in office settings. Both roles require a background in structural engineering, but the engineer typically holds a PE license and works directly on structural integrity, while the designer concentrates on creating detailed plans. Understanding these differences helps clients find the right professional for their residential structural needs.

Job description

Structural Engineer – Residential & Light Commercial

Woodstock, Georgia | $90,000–$110,000 + Bonus

Tired of Being Just Another Engineer in a Huge Firm?

Here's an opportunity to join a growing structural engineering firm where you'll actually know the people you're working with, have direct access to leadership, and take ownership of your projects from design through completion.

We're looking for a Structural Engineer who enjoys the technical side of engineering but also wants variety, autonomy, and the satisfaction of seeing their designs become real structures.

You'll work on a diverse mix of residential and light commercial projects including new construction, additions, renovations, structural repairs, foundations, and framing systems.

No endless layers of management.

No being stuck designing the same thing every day.

You'll work directly with experienced engineers, architects, builders, contractors, and clients while developing practical structural solutions that actually get built.

Why This Opportunity Stands OutOwn Your Projects

This isn't a production-line engineering position.

You'll have the opportunity to take projects from initial concept through structural design, drawings, coordination, and completion.

You'll see the entire process and understand how your engineering decisions affect the finished project.

Work on Something Different Every Day

The project mix includes:

  • Custom residential construction

  • Home additions

  • Renovations

  • Structural repairs

  • Wood-framed structures

  • Foundations

  • Light commercial buildings

  • Existing building modifications

If you enjoy solving structural puzzles instead of repeatedly designing the same building type, you'll like the variety here.

Get Out From Behind the Computer Occasionally

Most of your work will be engineering and design, but you'll also have occasional local site visits to evaluate existing conditions and see projects firsthand.

The key word is local.

This isn't a heavy-travel consulting position where you're constantly living out of a suitcase.

Small Company. Big Impact.

You'll join a small, family-oriented engineering firm where your work will be noticed.

You'll have direct access to experienced engineers and company leadership rather than being buried several levels deep inside a large organization.

That creates an excellent environment for an engineer who wants to continue developing technically while gaining more responsibility and independence.

What You'll Be Doing

You'll provide structural engineering and design for residential and light commercial projects throughout the area.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Designing structural systems for residential and light commercial buildings

  • Performing structural calculations and analysis

  • Designing wood framing systems

  • Developing foundation designs

  • Preparing framing plans

  • Producing construction documents

  • Creating and modifying engineering drawings using AutoCAD

  • Reviewing drawings for structural integrity and code compliance

  • Developing solutions for renovations, additions, and structural repairs

  • Evaluating existing structures

  • Performing occasional local site visits

  • Coordinating with architects, builders, contractors, homeowners, and clients

  • Managing multiple projects and deadlines

  • Maintaining accurate engineering documentation

What We're Looking For

We're looking for an engineer who understands structural design and enjoys finding practical solutions to real-world construction challenges.

Ideally, you'll bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related discipline

  • Structural design experience

  • Residential structural engineering experience

  • Knowledge of wood-framed construction

  • Understanding of foundations and structural framing systems

  • Ability to perform structural calculations and develop construction documents

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively with architects, contractors, builders, and clients

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

AutoCAD experience is preferred.

EIT or PE certification is a plus, but it is not required.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $90,000–$110,000, depending on experience

The company also offers:

  • Annual performance bonus

  • Annual performance reviews

  • Potential 3–5% annual salary increases based on performance

  • 3% IRA match

  • Company-provided computer

  • Company-provided tools for site visits

  • Relocation assistance available for the right candidate

And here's something increasingly rare in engineering:

A predictable schedule.

Monday through Friday with your choice of approximately 7:00 AM–4:00 PM or 8:00 AM–5:00 PM.

Minimal weekend work.

Local site visits only.

Build Structures — And Build Your Career

This is an excellent opportunity for a Structural Engineer who wants to escape the corporate shuffle and become an important part of a growing engineering firm.

You'll get variety.

You'll get ownership.

You'll work directly with the people making decisions.

And you'll have the opportunity to grow professionally as the company continues to grow around you.

If you enjoy residential structural engineering and want your next position to offer more than simply another desk and another stack of calculations, we'd like to hear from you.
