Job description

Help shape the future of aquatic recreation in Strathcona County! As an Aquatics Recreation Programmer, you'll coordinate programs, support staff success, and ensure residents of all ages enjoy safe, high-quality aquatic experiences that encourage lifelong health and wellness.  

The Recreation Programmer ensures high-quality recreation programming opportunities exist for Strathcona County residents which meet their needs, maximize resources, ensure safety and reflect the mission statement of Recreation, Parks and Culture of generating opportunities that enable the pursuit of healthy lifestyle choices.This Recreation Programmer position will work in the Aquatics sector. Typical work shifts may include days, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.   
 

This posting is for 1 temporary full-time position up to 18 months

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate recruiting, hiring and staff retention strategies to ensure optimal service levels and skill sets required for specific programs, as well as facility culture fit  
  • Schedule, coach and monitor instructors to ensure the delivery of quality programs that adhere to best practices, industry/government standards, municipal policies, and professional regulations
  • Day-to-day supervision of part-time, hourly staff ensuring provision of tools and resources required for program delivery  
  • Develop annual program plans ensuring the work areas is set up for future organizational success  
  • Plan, implement, monitor and evaluate programs and services to ensure community needs are met  
  • Provide program detail and information to marketing for area specific recreation guide pages on a sessional basis  
  • Responsible for all aspects of the functioning of programs, its staff with respect to guest and internal customer service issues, resolution and process implementation. This includes but is not limited to; program sales, Intelli/RecOnline systems, and understanding of the multiple facility operations and services
  • Work with marketing to develop marketing tools for programs, including programs requiring additional/specialized promotion
  • Promote and cross-market recreation programs and services with RPC marketing to ensure maximum participation and supporting revenue
  • Seek to understand and respond to internal and external guest inquiries in a timely and courteous manner using a variety of modalities
  • Manage financial resources associated with procurement and contracts, including implementation of County procurement procedures, creation of purchasing requisitions, approval of invoices and budget reconciliations

Qualificationsand Skills:

  • Diploma or Degree in Recreation, Business, Physical Education, or related discipline  
  • 3 years of experience in programming/supervisory or leadership capacity
  • Certifications Considered Assets:  
    • National LifeguardPool
    • Lifesaving Instructor  
    • National Lifeguard Instructor  
    • Intermediate First Aid & CPR-C Instructor  
    • Lifesaving Society Trainer
    • Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor
  • Aquatic program theory or recreation programming related experience  
  • Understanding of aquatic program industry standards and best practices  
  • Computer skills including Microsoft office applications, registration and booking systems such as Intelligenz software, Oracle and web-based staff scheduling program experience is an asset
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent guest service, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and budgeting abilities
  • Strong leadership and team qualities along with a high level of creativity, flexibility, and innovation
  • Ability to meet annual program and administrative deadlines while attending to daily operational requirements
  • Manage expectations of program participants, residents and program venues

  • Current Intermediate First Aid/CPR & WHIMIS
  • Submission of a Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's license
