Job description
Nature and Variety of Work The Prince George's County Youth@Work Internship Program is seeking professional and energetic interns interested in gaining experiential and industry-based work opportunities. The Youth@Work Internship Program attracts talent in entry-level roles, exposes interns to various careers, and employs young adults between the ages of 18 - 24 to develop skills to fill current and future vacant positions within the Prince George's County Government. These are full-time and part-time temporary positions which will expose interns to job/career opportunities within the Prince George's County Government.
Stevens Amendment Funding Disclosure: The Youth@Work Internship Program is funded through a U.S. Department of Labor - Employment and Training Administration grant award of $3,000,000 (100%). Examples of Work There are eight (8) disciplines being offered this year for an internship through the Youth@Work Internship Program
Each discipline offers a unique set of opportunities that are career focused and the opportunities are dependent on the work an intern will be assigned in each agency. Budget Management and Finance - Examples of Work: Interns who have an interest in budget, finance, accounting, economics or business/public management.
Interns should have excellent written and oral communications, math and analytical skills. Experience in advanced Excel spreadsheets, including formulas. The selected intern will work on budgets, Capital Improvement Program budgets, review risk assessments and attend and represent the County at leadership meetings.
Education and experience gained includes budget, finance, accounting, quantitative analysis, economics, or business/public management. Community and Customer Relations Examples of Work: Interns are needed who have excellent written and oral communication skills, strong listening skills and are experienced in Microsoft Office Suite. Interns ensure residents are connected with government resources, attend and represent the County at community events and assist residents with varying backgrounds, diversity issues and concerns.
Education and experience gained includes communications, marketing, or public relations. Environmental Services Examples of Work: Interns plan work addressing a wide range of issues relating to pollution, environmental land use, and solid waste management, analyze data or situations to determine an appropriate course of action from many alternatives, assist in the preparation of background materials and data for the formulation and implementation of the County's planning/program development, and participate in outreach to the public and at various public/private events to educate stakeholders on issues having a Countywide impact. Education and experience gained includes urban and regional planning, urban design, civil engineering, economics, business or public administration, environmental science, or political science.
Government Operations Examples of Work: Interns who can work independently and have an interest in the areas of Human Resources Management, Procurement and Contracting and Public Policy and Legislative Support. Interns must exude excellent written and oral communications skills and strong listening and decision-making skills. Education and experience gained includes human resources, psychology, organizational development, procurement, marketing, economics, retailing, public policy, business or public administration.
Health and Human Services Examples of Work: Interns provide primary prevention to reduce the incidence of communicable diseases, assists in clinics, investigates cases involving infectious diseases, implements nutrition education to the public, and assists clinicians with various tasks. Interns are needed who have strong written and oral communications skills; strong listening and decision-making ability. Education and experience gained includes biology, counseling, physical or social science, nursing, social work, social service, sociology, or psychology.
Infrastructure and Development Examples of Work: Interns plan work addressing a wide range of issues relating to economic or transportation, collect, compile, and analyze population, transportation, housing, land use, and other factors and develops project reports, review submitted plans, documents, and projects to determine if they meet required regulations and participate in outreach to the public and at various public/private events to educate stakeholders about issues having a Countywide impact. Information Technology Examples of Work: Interns assist with compiling project status reports, ensure IT activities comply with policies and procedures and presents information on IT business solutions. Preferred to have certifications in CISM, CRISC, CCNA, CCT, CSM, Comp TIA A+, Microsoft 365 Fundamentals.
Must have knowledge of computer systems and troubleshooting and experience in web development. Education and experience gained includes IT, business, or public administration. Public Safety Examples of Work: Interns may gain experience in the field of public safety to include but not limited to a correctional facility, operate a workstation comprised of multiple computers to initiate calls for service or provide emergency pre-arrival and post-arrival instructions to callers; and provide support for special events, programs and projects.
Interns must have a strong desire to work in a public safety environment, knowledge of the geography of the County, understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions, deal courteously and effectively with others, pass pre-employment examinations and background investigation and possess a driver's license. Education and experience gained includes criminal justice, law enforcement, emergency management, corrections, homeland security, or legal studies. Qualifications Candidates Must: Be a resident of Prince George's County, Maryland Be between the ages of 18-24 by October 1, 2026 Have a 2.5 or higher-grade point average Include and submit in the application a short summary of your reason for desiring to participate in this internship Be a former Prince George's County Summer Youth Enrichment Program (SYEP) participant Conduct an interview with an Agency representative (if progressed to the next level) Organization specific requirements may include: Completion of a skills and/or behavioral assessment Passing a pre-employment background process (paid by the requesting agency) ONLY ONLINE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED Eligibility to Work: Under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, an employer is required to hire only U.S
