POSITION OPEN: Head Custodian - Temporary (Expected dates 5/20 - 8/20)
LOCATION: Norup International School
Monday - Friday, approx. 6:30 am - 3:00 pm
40 hours/week
COMPENSATION: Starting at $18.53 per hour per the current AFSCME Salary Schedule - commensurate with education/experience + benefit package provided in the current AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement.
POSITION OBJECTIVE: To assist the Administrator and staff with the responsibility of the building's physical plant, systems and grounds so that children can learn and grow in a safe, clean, welcoming and environmentally "friendly" school. We are looking for a leader with a "no-excuses" approach to facility management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High standards for attendance, punctuality, initiative, and the ability to work without constant supervision
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Three years successful experience as a Custodian
  • Pass physical examination showing ability to perform manual labor including stooping, bending, lifting 50 pounds or more
  • Able to communicate appropriately and effectively, as well as understand both oral and written instructions
  • Ability to create and maintain good public relations with clients
  • Ability to use building equipment, materials, and methods used in Custodial work, to follow safe procedures, and comply with all laws and regulations related to work
  • Ability to complete minor maintenance repairs
  • A demonstrated sense of Team work and willingness to learn
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Ability to recognize, analyze and correct building problems
  • Preferred: Valid low-pressure boiler operations license
  • Preferred: Demonstrated ability in electrical, mechanical and plumbing repairs

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Taking primary ownership of the cleanliness, safety and presentability of the building
  • Provide direction to building Custodial/Maintenance staff,
  • Lead and participate in summer project cleaning at Norup or other buildings as assigned.
  • Lead and participate in final building preparations for the start of the school year ensuring all systems are operational and the facility is welcoming.
  • Conduct inspection activities and preventative maintenance activities as required both inside and outside of the building
  • Make routine repairs to the building and equipment as needed. Major repairs shall be reported in writing to the building administrator and Central Maintenance
  • Be responsible for the safe and proper operation and maintenance of heating, ventilating and mechanical equipment of the building
  • Comply with the requirements of the building prevention maintenance checklist
  • Check the building for potential fire hazards and correct them
  • Be responsible for assuring that all exits are open from the inside when building is in use in order to meet fire regulations
  • Perform painting in the building
  • Maintain a master painting record for the building and all rooms
  • Perform repairs, movement and adjustment of furniture
  • Immediately replace all broken glass or other hazardous waste and dispose of it properly following all policies and regulations.
  • Remove snow and ice from all walks, porches and other areas immediately around the building
  • Be responsible for the care of grounds, including trimming of the shrubs and ground care equipment
  • Pick up litter around the building site
  • Perform duties of other custodians when necessary and lead by example
  • Be responsible for maintaining a schedule of Custodial Staff for evening events and functions
  • Be available for taking calls from Security Service
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
