Job Summary
This position is for a temporary, part-time, 20 hours (0.5 FTE) clinical social worker in the Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program in C.S. Mott Children's Hospital at Michigan Medicine. This specialized role addresses the unique needs of children, adolescents, and young adults receiving care in the clinic. As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, the MSW coordinates care, provides crisis intervention, advocates for patients and families, and connects them to essential resources directly improving outcomes and strengthening overall quality of care.
C.S. Mott Children's Hospital at Michigan Medicine supports the care and treatment of patients with a wide variety of specialty care needs. The multitude of clinics and programs within the hospital share a common philosophy of caring for the whole child (and person), which not only includes excellent medical care but an accompanying regard for the mental health and well-being of our patients and the families who love them. Psychosocial care is an indispensable component in the overall clinical care of these complex patients.

You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of social workers and other medical professionals providing bio-psychosocial assessments, treatment, and case management services to patients with medical and/or psychiatric diagnoses. You will play a vital role in providing clinical social work services to patients and families in a pediatric setting.

Responsibilities*
You will be responsible for:
  • Evaluation of psychosocial needs and provision of billable social work interventions with a high degree of autonomy
  • Patient Advocacy related to navigating health care systems
  • Counseling to patients and families to address issues of coping and management of children with chronic health issues
  • Work closely with inter-disciplinary teams to collaborate on plan of care for patient
  • Collaboration with medical teams and Child Protection team to assess issues of neglect or abuse
  • Working closely with community agencies including with school systems to advocate for the special needs of chronically ill children.
  • Participation in inter-disciplinary team meetings, Social Work meetings and committee work that support the patient care mission.

Required Qualifications*
  • A Master's degree in Social Work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education.
  • A current license to practice social work in the State of Michigan.
  • This classification requires Primary Source Verification.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Previous experience with families and children around issues of chronic illness, adjustment to illness and disability, learning/school issues, locating community resources
  • Due to the nature of the variety of medical diagnoses associated with this population, proficiency in adjustment, loss, and bereavement issues is desirable
  • Previous experience with medical and mental health social work.
  • Skilled in developing rapport and effectively communicating with a diverse patient population.
  • Efficient, accurate assessment of patient needs and effective care planning
  • Effective organizational skills, flexibility, self-motivation, the ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks in a dynamic medical clinic.
  • Independent, sound decision-making is necessary for success in this position.
  • Effective collaboration with a large multi-disciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in keeping accurate and timely clinical records by computer.

Modes of Work

Work Schedule
This is a temporary, part-time, 20 hour/week position. The hours will be Wednesday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM, Thursday, 8:00AM - 12:30PM, Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM, onsite at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.
Work Locations
This position will primarily work out of C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, 1540 E. Hospital Dr., Ann Arbor, MI 48109. This is an onsite position.

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
