Primary Purpose
The Gear Maintenance Assistant supports the Outdoor Leadership (OL) Program by assessing, redesigning, and implementing an improved gear and equipment storage facility. This position ensures that OL program equipment is safely stored, efficiently organized, and readily accessible, contributing to the operational readiness and effectiveness of the program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Facility Assessment & Planning:
- Review the current Outdoor Leadership gear and equipment storage facility to identify inefficiencies and areas for improvement.
- Develop a redesign plan for the storage facility in coordination with the OL Program Director.
Construction & Demolition:
- Perform light demolition of existing storage structures or configurations as needed.
- Assemble and install storage facility components using appropriate tools and techniques.
Equipment & Tools Operation:
- Operate hand and power tools including sledgehammers, screwdrivers, and drills safely and effectively.
- Lift and move heavy objects in accordance with safe lifting practices.
Inventory & Organization:
- Assist in a comprehensive inventory of Outdoor Leadership gear and equipment.
- Categorize and organize equipment within the redesigned storage facility for efficient retrieval and use.
Coordination & Communication:
- Coordinate scheduling and project milestones with the OL Program Director.
- Communicate progress, challenges, and completion of tasks in a timely manner.

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. - Knowledge of basic construction and light demolition methods and best practices.
- Knowledge of hand and power tool operation, including safe handling of sledgehammers, screwdrivers, and drills.
- Skill in assessing an existing facility and developing a practical, implementable redesign plan.
- Skill in assembling storage components and fixtures with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Skill in inventory management, including categorization and labeling of equipment.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects safely, following proper lifting techniques.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while meeting project goals.
- Ability to communicate effectively and coordinate scheduling with a program supervisor.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently within a flexible, variable schedule.
Ergonomic Requirements
Regular office hours are established between 8 am - 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.
Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
- Associates degree (in specific field(s) related to position).
Experience:
- One (1) year of related professional work experience.

Education:
- Bachelor's degree in a related professional field.
Experience:
- Two (2) Years' experience in a higher education setting.
