POSITION SUMMARY
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation's Nature Preserves and Natural Resources Division is excited to add a Temporary Natural Resources Assistant to the team at Latta Nature Preserve! This position will assist the Trail Resources Coordinator with day-to-day trail maintenance and construction tasks, assist with inventory and data collection of existing trails, trail structures and problem areas. The incumbent will also assist with maintenance of wayfinding and trail marking for existing trails. In addition, they may also assist with prescribed fires, invasive species control, deer management operations and using equipment to maintain and restore natural habitats. The incumbent will primarily work in the nature preserve but may also serve in other Mecklenburg County parks where natural surface trails exist. The schedule for this temporary role will consist of shifts on Tuesday - Friday between the hours of 6:30am - 5:00pm.
Division Specific Information: Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation's Nature Preserves and Natural Resources Division is responsible for the protection and management of natural resources in Mecklenburg County natural areas. The total acreage of these unique land assets currently stands at about 20,000 acres with about 7,700 acres protected as nature preserve. The Division contributes to regional environmental leadership and research by partnering with other public agencies and non-profit organizations in neighboring counties and throughout the state.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
โ€ข Conduct natural areas assessments, invasive species removal, boundary marking, and monitoring rare and federally endangered species
โ€ข May interact with preserve/facility visitors to provide information about the nature preserve
โ€ข Assist with preparation of natural resource management plans and activities
โ€ข Conduct data entry and assists with research
โ€ข Maintain general housekeeping in work area
โ€ข Maintain habitat in their area
โ€ข Assist in coordinating efforts of volunteers
โ€ข May have the opportunity to assist Environmental Education staff with assignments
โ€ข Follow the work plan as prepared by the supervisor
โ€ข Respond to emergency situations
โ€ข Perform related work as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
No experience required
Education: Requires enrollment in, or completion of a bachelor's degree in natural/environmental sciences, biology, botany, ecology, environmental education, education, or related field
Combination of relevant experience and education accepted?: Yes
Computer Skills: General knowledge of applicable computer programs
Licenses/Certifications: Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License and County Driving Privileges
