Terms of Employment: 10 Month Employee - temporary if hired after contractual start date
Reports to: Building Principal and Director of Elementary
Location: Multiple Elementary Buildings (6) within the Capital School District
Salary: Current teacher salary schedule
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet the requirements established by the Delaware Department of Education for a Music Teacher Standard Certificate (K-12), including:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Music Education or another qualifying music preparation program.
  • Eligibility for or possession of a valid Delaware Educator License (Initial, Continuing, or Advanced).
  • Eligibility for or possession of a Delaware Music Teacher Standard Certificate (K-12). Delaware's Music Teacher Standard Certificate requires an appropriate educator license and completion of an approved music educator preparation pathway (or other qualifying pathway), along with meeting applicable content knowledge requirements established by the state, including the required Praxis examination when applicable.

The Elementary Band Teacher provides high-quality instrumental music instruction that develops students' musical knowledge, performance skills, creativity, and appreciation for music. The teacher establishes a positive, engaging learning environment where all students can successfully participate in beginning band and instrumental music experiences. The Elementary Band Teacher collaborates with classroom teachers, school leaders, families, and community partners to support the district's educational mission while fostering a lifelong appreciation of music.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan and deliver standards-aligned instrumental music instruction for elementary students across multiple buildings.
  • Teach beginning instrumental techniques, music literacy, tone production, rhythm, performance skills, and ensemble playing.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of all students.
  • Foster creativity, collaboration, perseverance, and confidence through music.
  • Incorporate effective instructional strategies, technology, and research-based practices into music instruction.
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student engagement and achievement.
  • Assess student progress using a variety of formative and summative measures.
  • Monitor individual student growth and provide timely, meaningful feedback.
  • Maintain accurate records of student achievement and communicate progress with families.
  • Utilize assessment data to inform instructional planning.
  • Recruit and retain students in the elementary band program.
  • Organize and conduct rehearsals, performances, concerts, and school/community events.
  • Prepare students for performances that demonstrate musical growth and achievement.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of instruments, music, uniforms (if applicable), and instructional materials.
  • Coordinate instrument selection, distribution, care, and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, special educators, specialists, counselors, and administrators to support student success.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and families regarding student progress, performances, and program expectations.
  • Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), faculty meetings, and professional learning opportunities.
  • Support district fine arts initiatives and collaborate with other music educators to ensure program continuity.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in accordance with district policies and state regulations.
  • Participate in school improvement efforts and district initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal.
