Job description

Department: Exhibitions
Reports to: Senior Manager, Exhibitions Fabrication
Job Type: Temporary - Part-time
Job Classification: Hourly (Non-exempt)
Workplace Location: Los Angeles - Academy Museum
Compensation: $25.00 - $31.00 per hour
Summary/Objective:
The Fabrication Technician will assist with the construction, installation, and maintenance of museum display casework and scenic elements, as well as assist in many aspects of preparation for exhibition production.
Essential Functions of the Job:
  • Work in a team environment and abide by all health and safety protocols.
  • Assist with the fabrication of various components of exhibition-related builds.
  • Safely use various tools and equipment within the shop and gallery spaces.
  • Ensure external fabricators' methods take into consideration rotations and flexibility needed for future exhibitions.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings to build exhibition and shop-related fixtures.
  • Provide accurate and timely updates to the Fabrication Manager on project progress.
  • Ensure construction methods and materials used during build conform to approved conservation standards.
  • Assist with mock-ups of case and scenic layout.
  • Assist with maintaining the internal shop maintenance, material inventory, shop tool inventory list, and internal shop task list.
Required Competencies:
  • 3+ years in a design-related field (e.g., Industrial Design, Engineering, Interior, Furniture Design, Tradeshow, Exhibit, Props, and Cabinetry).
  • Knowledge of common construction methods, techniques, materials, and applications.
  • Working proficiency with common shop equipment and practices (e.g., hand tools, power tools, table saws, panel saws, routers, laminating, etc).
  • Understanding of construction techniques, familiarity with wood and composite wood substrates, acrylics, plastic laminates, adhesives, wood finishes, paints, basic metals and finishes, basic metal fabrication, and CNC machinery.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with art handling work at a museum, fine art handling company, gallery, or artist studio is a plus.
  • Experience with Vector Works or other similar CAD programs is a plus.

Physical Demands:
  • Ascending and working on ladders.
  • Moving, standing, and stooping.
  • Moving and transporting up to 50 lbs.
  • Working around paints, cleansers, and other similar products.
  • Working in spaces that collect dust.
  • Ability to work safely in a variety of work conditions, including an active construction site.
  • Ability to drive a forklift and use material-handling equipment (the Museum will certify).
