Job description

Job Title: CNC Programmer

Job Description

This role focuses on creating, modifying, and optimizing CNC programs to support precision machining operations in a fabrication or job shop environment. The CNC Programmer interprets blueprints and CAD models, selects appropriate tooling and cutting parameters, and collaborates closely with machinists and engineers to ensure efficient, high-quality production. The position requires strong technical expertise, hands-on problem-solving, and a commitment to continuous improvement in machining processes.

Responsibilities

  • Create, modify, and optimize CNC programs using Mastercam or similar CAM software to support production requirements.
  • Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and CAD models to develop accurate and efficient CNC programs.
  • Select appropriate tooling, speeds, and feeds based on material type, tolerances, and part geometry.
  • Run simulations and verify CNC programs prior to production to identify and correct potential issues.
  • Troubleshoot CNC programs during setup and production to resolve machining, dimensional, or quality problems.
  • Collaborate closely with machinists, engineers, and shop floor teams to improve machining efficiency and part quality.
  • Support machine setup and first article runs by validating programs and making necessary adjustments.
  • Continuously improve machining processes to reduce waste, minimize cycle times, and enhance overall productivity.
  • Program both CNC mills and CNC lathes for custom, one-off parts and small production runs.
  • Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) principles when interpreting drawings and programming parts.
  • Work independently to manage programming tasks and meet production deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Contribute to the machining of large-scale or structural components when required.

Essential Skills

  • 3–7+ years of CNC programming experience.
  • Strong experience creating and editing CNC programs using CAD and CAM software, including Mastercam or similar tools.
  • Proficiency in programming both CNC mills and CNC lathes in a fabrication or job shop environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed blueprints, engineering drawings, and CAD models.
  • Comfort working with tight tolerances and custom, one-off parts.
  • Hands-on collaboration skills with machinists and shop floor teams to support production.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills related to CNC programming and machining processes.
  • Ability to work independently and consistently meet production deadlines.

Work Environment

The role operates in a fabrication or job shop environment that focuses on custom and one-off parts, including potential large-scale or structural components. You will work closely with machinists, engineers, and other shop floor personnel, using CNC mills and CNC lathes, Mastercam or similar CAM software, and CAD tools such as SolidWorks. The work involves tight tolerances and precision machining, with an emphasis on simulations, first article runs, and continuous process improvement. The environment is production-focused and time-sensitive, requiring independent work, collaboration, and adherence to shop safety practices.
