Job Description:

To assist in providing quality patient care in a manner which is patient focused, technically appropriate and cost effective. The Intraoperative Care Technician (ICT) works under the direct supervision of the registered nurse in accordance with the standards of practice, within the guidelines of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act and the mission and philosophy of Lutheran General Hospital. The ICT works in collaboration with the registered nurse as a partner in care of patients. The ICT recognizes the needs and behaviors of patients and various age groups and provides care in a manner that is appropriate. The ICT strives for quality patient care which assures the customer is treated in a holistic manner with dignity and respect.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides general patient care duties as directed by the registered nurse.

  • Performs tasks related to sterility with an understanding of sterile technique.

  • Performs tasks related to pre-operative preparation.

  • Under direction and supervision of Registered Nurse performs surgical scrub assistant duties in cystoscopy room.

  • Performs tasks related to intra-operative support.

  • Performs unit secretary(US) duties as assigned. The Unit Information Secretary serves to facilitate unit operations through accurate oversight and effective management of patients' medical records (electronic and non-electronic), coordination of services, supplies and the appropriate transcription of written orders.

  • Patient care support functions.


Education/Experience Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Certified Nursing Assistant preferred but not required OR (OR meaning or not operating room) Nursing student or 1-year previous healthcare clinical experience preferred.

  • BLS/CPR required to have upon hire


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing. Courteous and professional interpersonal skills. Basic math calculation.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations. May be exposed to hazardous materials and life-threatening diseases. Ability to perform lifting/transfer activities related to patients (up to 50 lb. may be required). Ability to work designated shifts including weekends and holidays. Ability to transport objects from one location to another. This position needs to recognize needs and behaviors of specific age groups of patients treated. Ability to assume on-call responsibility. Ability to stand for long periods of time. Ability to communicate with mask on and not facing others.

  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis
