Job description

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, and we've designed the system with the capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers, from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.

Export Control Requirement

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Manufacturing Software Systems (MSS) is seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer who will lead the design, architecture, and delivery of Manufacturing Execution System (MES) capabilities that power satellite, ground equipment, and ASIC manufacturing. You will define the technical vision for MES systems, drive architectural decisions, and mentor engineers while solving a variety of complex technical challenges across manufacturing orchestration, factory automation, and production data systems.

You will lead the effort to translate business and functional requirements into scalable, highly available system architectures. You will own the technical direction for critical MES capabilities, set engineering standards, and partner with senior technical and business leaders across the organization. You will tackle challenging, novel situations and will have the opportunity to work with multiple technical teams spanning a variety of domains: software, hardware, networks, RF, embedded, real-time, distributed, as well as industrial automation systems.

Key job responsibilities
  • Lead the design and architecture of MES software systems that drive the assembly, calibration, testing, and provisioning of satellites across production lines.
  • Own the technical vision and long-term architectural roadmap for MES capabilities, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security as production volumes ramp.
  • Define and enforce engineering best practices, coding standards, design patterns, and operational excellence across the MES engineering team.
  • Architect end-to-end system capabilities for manufacturing orchestration, including integration with shop floor control systems (e.g., Ignition), ERP, PLM, and industrial automation platforms.
  • Lead system design reviews, drive technical trade-off discussions, and make high-judgment decisions balancing speed, quality, cost, and long-term maintainability.
  • Collaborate with teams from manufacturing engineering, product engineering, and security engineering to identify requirements and design scalable MES solutions.
  • Mentor and develop junior and mid-level engineers; raise the technical bar through code reviews, architecture reviews, and hands‑on technical guidance.
  • Drive technical deep dives to resolve complex production issues, system performance bottlenecks, and cross-service dependencies.
  • Design and implement telemetry, observability, and monitoring frameworks to ensure system health and enable data‑driven decision making.
  • Own the operational readiness of MES systems, including deployment pipelines, disaster recovery, and incident response processes.
  • Design secure manufacturing software systems that maintain rigorous compliance standards across internal facilities and global contract manufacturing sites.
  • Lead the technical execution of system upgrades, migrations, and new capability deployments across production environments.
  • Deliver solutions that enable repeatable, highly available, and controlled manufacturing processes by standardizing, automating, and simplifying manufacturing test development and execution.
A day in the life

In this role as a Senior Software Development Engineer, you will set the technical direction for Leo's MES platform and lead the delivery of critical manufacturing software capabilities. You will balance hands‑on coding and architecture work with technical leadership — mentoring engineers, driving design reviews, and partnering with cross‑functional stakeholders to align on priorities.

A typical day

A typical day involves leading architecture discussions for new MES features, reviewing designs and code from team members, diving deep into complex production issues, and collaborating with manufacturing engineers on system requirements. You will engage with an experienced cross‑disciplinary team to develop, qualify, produce, and deploy solutions enabling Leo's global manufacturing network.

About the team

Software, and test engineering teams, MSS delivers the tools and frameworks that enable consistent test operations — from fabrication to final provisioning — across internal facilities and external contract manufacturers.

The team's mission is to transform Leo's manufacturing into a repeatable, highly available, and controlled process by standardizing, automating, and simplifying manufacturing test development and execution, while maintaining rigorous security and compliance standards both at internal facilities and global contract manufacturing sites.

Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
  • 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
  • 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
