Job description

Labor & Delivery Advanced Practice Provider (Locum Tenens)

Elizabeth, NJ

Comprehensive OB/GYN Hospitalist Services | Urgent 6-Provider Full-Time Need

Are you an experienced inpatient OB/GYN Advanced Practice Provider seeking a highly consistent, full-time locum tenens opportunity in northern New Jersey? A major regional medical center in Elizabeth is expanding its clinical coverage model and urgently seeking six full-time Advanced Practice Providers—either Registered Nurse First Assistants (RNFAs) or Physician Assistants (PAs)—to support their comprehensive 24/7 obstetric and gynecological services.

The Opportunity

Step into a high-functioning hospitalist ecosystem where you will manage acute obstetrical patients, provide surgical first-assist coverage, and handle emergent department consults.

  • Clinical Focus: Primary coverage is centered on the Labor & Delivery (L&D) unit. Key daily responsibilities include managing triage, managing active labor, rounding on postpartum patients, and performing urgent OB/GYN emergency department consultations as requested.

  • Surgical Scope: Act as the dedicated surgical First Assist for scheduled and emergent gynecological surgeries and cesarean sections, stepping in to support the attending physician in place of a resident.

  • Team Dynamics: Practice within an incredibly supportive, multi-disciplinary care team. You will be paired directly with an on-site OB Attending Physician and a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) during every single shift. Locum providers maintain zero administrative or supervisory responsibility over other staff.

  • Schedule & Commitment: The hospital is strictly seeking full-time candidates capable of fulfilling a 36-to-40-hour workweek. Shifts are structured flexibly in 12-hour or 24-hour blocks spanning a Monday-through-Sunday rotation (7:00 AM – 7:00 AM).

  • Patient Load: Volume is dynamic and naturally unpredictable, reflecting a busy urban hospital environment.

Location: Elizabeth, NJ

Positioned adjacent to Newark and just minutes outside of New York City, Elizabeth offers a dense, culturally rich urban environment with incredible transit connectivity.

  • Community Depth: Serve a diverse patient demographic, providing deeply rewarding clinical care to families from a wide array of cultural backgrounds.

  • Local Attractions: Home to the massive Mills at Jersey Gardens mall, historic mid-town architecture, and beautiful waterfront views along the Arthur Kill.

  • Unrivaled Accessibility: Exceptional transit hub featuring multiple NJ Transit rail stations for a 20-minute commute straight into Manhattan, direct highway access via the NJ Turnpike, and immediate proximity to Newark Liberty International Airport.

Compensation & Shift Logistics
  • Contract Structure: Fixed hourly compensation with robust built-in overtime protections (overtime rates apply after 12 consecutive hours in a single daily shift).

  • Assignment Timeline: Positions begin as soon as credentialed, starting June 1, 2026, with an ongoing, long-term timeline through at least December 31, 2026.

  • Privileging: Temporary or emergency clinical privileges can be granted rapidly once all initial credentialing files are fully complete.

Candidate Requirements

To satisfy the surgical and safety requirements of this high-volume obstetrical service, candidates must be fully licensed and credentialed prior to presentation:

  • Licensure: Must hold an active, completely unencumbered New Jersey State License (APN or PA) to be considered.

  • Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Track: Must hold an active Board Certification as a Women's Health or Family Nurse Practitioner, be certified in surgical first assisting (RNFA), and be prepared to submit comprehensive recent surgical case logs.

  • Physician Assistant (PA) Track: Must hold an active NCCPA certification with demonstrated experience in surgical first assisting for OB/GYN procedures.

  • Clinical Readiness: Complete independence and comfort scrubbing into L&D surgical cases and managing acute floor emergencies.

If you are a dedicated advanced practice clinician ready to step into a key obstetrical role within a premier northern New Jersey system, we invite you to apply. Interviews are being fast-tracked immediately with the department directors, Maribeth Santillo and Mary McTigue—apply today to connect with our recruitment team!
