Job Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
  • Build and modify prototype parts, subassemblies, and test fixtures using machining, welding, fabrication, construction, and finishing techniques as needed.
  • Review engineering drawings and sketches; clarify requirements with engineers and designers to ensure prototypes meet intent and critical dimensions.
  • Select appropriate materials and processes (e.g., metal, plastics, wood, composites; fastening, adhesives, coatings) to meet prototype performance and timeline needs.
  • Maintain shop readiness by performing basic preventive maintenance and housekeeping to uphold safety and quality standards.
  • Identify opportunities to improve build methods, tooling, and workflows; share ideas during project reviews and continuous improvement discussions. Sought after Skills: Partner with New Product Development teams to solve technical challenges and deliver high-quality prototypes on schedule, balancing speed with craftsmanship.
  • Perform fabrication work on weldments, brackets, frames, and test-bench equipment using safe shop practices.
  • Build displays, mockups, and concept models using general construction techniques and a variety of materials.
  • Complete finishing work such as sanding, surface prep, painting, and cosmetic detailing to support design reviews and customer-facing evaluations.
  • Interpret and work from engineering drawings with accuracy, including measurement, layout, and tolerance awareness.
  • Perform routine maintenance, basic troubleshooting, and cleaning of tools and equipment to keep the shop running efficiently. Participate in brainstorming sessions and provide practical feedback on design, materials, and process improvements.
  • Operate shop equipment such as mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses, saws, and handheld power tools, as appropriate for the build. Requirements: (Depending on experience level guidance and or training from tenured Staff will be included)
  • Experience in various skills such as machining, welding, fabrication, or construction, but we would be willing to train the right candidate in any of those areas.
  • Work or educational experience with multiple skilled trades knowledge like, manual machining, fabrication, molding/casting, fixture building, general construction & painting is preferred, but we are willing to train the right candidate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to read and apply GD&T basics and use precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges).
  • Experience with prototype-style problem solving, working with incomplete information, iterating quickly, and communicating tradeoffs.
  • Comfortable using a range of materials and processes
  • Strong organization skills to manage multiple builds, maintain documentation, and keep tools/materials orderly.
  • Prior experience in a model shop, R&D lab, maintenance shop, construction or manufacturing environment. Work Environment & Schedule This role is primarily hands-on in a shop environment. Schedules and project needs may vary based on build priorities; flexibility and reliable attendance are important to support prototype turnaround and test timelines.
