Foundry Melt Technician is responsible for controlling the process from the charging of furnaces to the transfer ladle of iron from the furnace to the ladle. Technicians melt the pig iron, steel, returns and alloys in an electric induction furnace while ensuring the temperature and chemistry of the metal meets requirements as instructed. The metal is then transferred to the ladle for pouring.

- Responsibilities:
- Operate overhead crane to load scrap into storage hoppers.
- Utilize automated charge make up system to weigh desired charge blend.
- Utilize automated alloy system to determine alloy additions to be added to the charge and weigh alloys.
- Charge and operate the furnace to melt the materials for the full melt cycle.
- Obtain molten bath temperature.
- Remove slag from molten bath.
- Obtain iron samples for QA spectrometer.
- Pour molten iron from furnace to transfer ladle.
- Make necessary repairs to the furnaces, shakers, and magnet to keep up with production.
- Removal of the old furnace linings and any repairs needed before relining such as: grouting, replacing any old hoses and repairing the spouts.
- Top capping the furnaces weekly.
- Sintering and cold starts.
- Repairing and relining ladles along with any fabricating due to the ladles being melted.
- Maintain a clean work environment in accordance with the 5L guidelines.
- Assist with or perform all other job related duties as assigned.
- Basic Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of Math (70 or higher) and Utility Test
- 90% Melt Skills Evaluation
- Summary of Necessary Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
- Minimum three to five years related experience and/or training preferred.
- Working knowledge of PC and Windows based software
- Basic Math Skills
- Mechanical Skills
- Forklift License Required
- Bobcat Experience Preferred
- Walden Experience Preferred
- Robot Experience Preferred

- Working Conditions:
- Job performance requires the employee to stand, lift, walk, reach, bend, grasp, stoop, push and pull.
- Lifting up to 80lbs.
- Exposure to moving parts such as crane, furnace, hopper, transfer ladle and forklift.
- Safety glasses and hearing protection are required at all times. Hard hat with tinted face shield required while on the deck; hard hat while around shaker pans and overhead return conveyor; hard hat with face shield and respirator mask (PAPR required) during reline.
- Exposure to forklift fumes and may be exposed to ambient temperatures of + or - 10 to 15 degrees.
- Composite or Steel-Toe Safety Footwear (either slip-off or with spats) is required.
- Leather gloves are required (Kevlar sleeves are available); appropriate gloves are required for reline.
- Lodge long sleeve shirt or Lodge short sleeve shirt with Kevlar sleeves required. 100% cotton clothing at all times; high temp jacket.
