Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Temporary Global Payroll Manager to provide interim leadership for a complex, fast-paced global payroll operation supporting approximately 300 employees across Us, and Europe. This is a hands-on management role requiring a seasoned payroll professional who can immediately step in, oversee payroll operations, and ensure payroll accuracy, compliance, and continuity across multiple international jurisdictions.
The successful candidate will lead a team of five payroll professionals (3 based in the U.S. and 2 in Europe) while serving as the subject matter expert for Workday Payroll and U.S. payroll tax compliance. This individual will collaborate closely with HR, Finance, Legal, and external payroll vendors to ensure seamless payroll operations across the organization's global footprint.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end payroll function across US & Europe.
- Serve as the hands-on Workday Payroll expert, processing payroll, validating payroll calculations, troubleshooting system issues, and partnering with HRIS on payroll-related configurations.
- Manage payroll calendars and ensure timely and accurate payroll processing across all global locations.
- Review payroll reconciliations, funding requirements, payroll registers, and final payroll approvals.
- Oversee relationships with global payroll vendors and act as the primary escalation point for payroll-related issues.
- Maintain payroll documentation, internal controls, standard operating procedures, and process documentation.
U.S. Payroll Tax & Compliance
- Serve as the organization's subject matter expert for U.S. federal, state, and local payroll tax compliance.
- Manage multi-state payroll tax registrations, filings, amendments, reconciliations, and year-end reporting.
- Ensure compliance with state unemployment insurance (SUI), local earned income taxes (EIT), and other jurisdictional payroll tax requirements.
- Partner with Finance and Legal regarding payroll tax implications related to remote employees, relocations, equity events, and multi-state taxation.
- Oversee annual payroll activities including W-2 preparation, reconciliations, and year-end filings.
Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and workload management for a team of five payroll professionals located in the U.S. and Europe.
- Serve as the escalation point for complex payroll issues and employee inquiries.
- Partner with Human Resources, Finance, Accounting, Legal, HRIS, and external auditors to ensure payroll accuracy and compliance.
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, internal controls, and operational efficiencies.
QualificationsRequired
- 7+ years of progressive payroll experience, including 2–3+ years in a Payroll Manager or Team Lead role.
- Extensive experience managing multi-country payroll operations, including the United States and at least three additional countries.
- Expert-level Workday Payroll experience with hands-on payroll processing, troubleshooting, and payroll configuration support.
- Deep expertise in U.S. payroll tax, including federal, state, and local tax compliance, multi-state payroll, tax registrations, year-end processing, and payroll reconciliations.
- Experience leading payroll teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong knowledge of payroll compliance, internal controls, and global payroll best practices.
- Excellent communication, leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to independently manage payroll operations while remaining hands-on with daily processing.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience processing payroll in International or European environments.
- Familiarity with Dayforce for U.S. payroll tax processing.
- Experience with payroll automation tools such as Workato or UiPath.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation preferred.
- Previous experience supporting a technology, SaaS, or multinational organization.
- Experience processing payroll related to equity compensation, including RSUs, stock options, or ESPPs.
