Description

Company Description

Payarc is a technology-driven payments company built to empower people and improve their organizations, one payment at a time. What began as smart, simple payment-processing tools and products has grown into a broader platform, backed by a team of world-class experts and top technology talent. We help new businesses get started, increase our customers' revenues, and bridge the gap between merchants and modern payment solutions-giving companies the tools they need to change the future of their business.

Position Summary

The Software Engineer II is a mid-level engineering role responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining scalable software solutions with limited guidance. This role owns features and components end-to-end and collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality payment applications, services, and systems.

The Software Engineer II contributes across all phases of the software development lifecycle-from requirements analysis through deployment and ongoing support-and is expected to uphold Payarc's engineering standards and secure, PCI DSS-compliant data-handling practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain software applications, APIs, and backend services with limited guidance
  • Build and integrate secure APIs and services, including payment-related functionality, in compliance with PCI DSS
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code
  • Participate in code reviews and pull requests-both giving and receiving constructive feedback-and follow engineering best practices
  • Collaborate with product managers, UI/UX designers, and other engineers to deliver features that meet user and business needs
  • Debug, test, and resolve technical issues of moderate complexity, including production defects surfaced through monitoring tools
  • Contribute to system architecture and design discussions
  • Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability
  • Ensure security, privacy, and data-protection standards are followed, including secure handling of sensitive and cardholder data
  • Evaluate and adopt new technologies and tools that improve development efficiency
  • Mentor and support Software Engineer I team members as needed
  • Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies using JIRA and Confluence (as applicable)

Technology Environment

Payarc engineers work across a broad, modern technology stack. Depending on the team and project, you may work with:

  • Backend: PHP (Laravel, Nova, Apiato) and services in languages such as Java, C#, Python, Go, and C++
  • Frontend: JavaScript with React and Angular, plus jQuery; HTML5, CSS3, LESS/SASS; Material Design
  • Mobile: native Android (Kotlin, Java) and iOS (Swift, Objective-C), with cross-platform work in React Native/Flutter; libraries such as Retrofit, OkHttp, and Firebase
  • Data: relational databases (MySQL, Oracle, Firebird) and NoSQL data stores
  • Cloud & DevOps: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Git/GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, Docker, and Kubernetes
  • Payments & security: PCI DSS-compliant systems, encryption standards such as TDES and DUKPT, and integrations with POS systems, terminals (e.g., PAX, AMP), and Magtek card readers
  • AI & machine learning: applied ML and LLM-based workflows in Python (TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn), including vector databases and embeddings
  • Collaboration & tooling: Agile/Scrum delivery with JIRA and Confluence, and application monitoring with tools such as Crashlytics and New Relic

Requirements

 QualificationsRequired

  • 2-4 years of professional software development experience
  • Proficiency in one or more of Payarc's core languages and frameworks (e.g., PHP/Laravel, JavaScript with React or Angular, Java, C#, Python, or Kotlin)
  • Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs and web services
  • Experience with relational databases such as MySQL or Oracle
  • Proficiency with Git/GitHub, including pull requests and code reviews
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

Preferred

  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), with AWS preferred
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Knowledge of NoSQL databases
  • Mobile development experience (Android with Kotlin, Retrofit/OkHttp, Firebase) or applied AI/ML exposure
