Description:

The painting position is primarily responsible for the application of high-performance coatings on structural steel prior to delivery to the job site. This position requires skill in the application of coatings, an understanding of surface preparation requirements, drawing interpretation, and material handling. It is a fast-paced position that demands attention to detail, individual initiative, and flexibility in daily activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Surface Preparation: Cleaning surfaces with hand tools or blast media to job specifications and marking and covering no-paint areas per drawing notes.
  • Paint Mixing: Selecting and mixing appropriate coatings according to specifications.
  • Application: Using tools such as airless sprayers, brushes, and rollers to apply coatings.
  • Quality Control: Ensuring that painted surfaces meet quality standards, including wet and dry film thickness, and are free of runs, bubbles, and debris.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Set and maintain paint pumps and other required equipment.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety procedures and regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Inspection: Inspect the final product to ensure it meets project specifications and quality requirements.
  • Documentation: Keep records of completed work and materials used.
  • Material Handling: Use overheard cranes and forklifts to move material through the shop and lay it out for painting.


Qualifications:

  • Attention to Detail: A keen eye for detail to ensure high-quality finishes.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in using various painting tools and techniques.
  • Safety Awareness: Knowledge of safety guidelines for material handling, overhead crane use, and hazardous material use and storage.
  • Drawing Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret drawings to mark no-paint zones and understand coating requirements.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs. repeatedly, occasionally lift greater than 50 lbs. with the support of other team members.
  • Ability to operate tools such as electric and gas-powered chain saws, nail guns, banding clamps, and pry bars.
  • Ability to work in an uncontrolled climate, including heat, cold, and humidity.
  • Capability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Ability to detect alarms and signals, both auditory and visual.
  • Depth perception and eye-hand coordination for precision tasks and safety.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with team members and follow instructions.
  • Ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
