Job description

Job Description The City of Avondale is proud to offer a unique, paid internship program that provides hands-on experience across various City departments. This part-time, temporary position runs for 14 weeks each semester - one in the fall and one in the spring - with interns working up to 20 hours per week. Each session will be hosted by a different City department, allowing students enrolled in an accredited college program related to the field to gain valuable, hands-on experience.

This internship is subject to funding availability and does not include benefits. Priority consideration will be given to residents of Avondale. Fall 2026 Internship Opportunity - Engineering Department Pay: $16.39 hourly | 14-Week Internship | Up to 20 Hours/Week This position may include evening and weekend assignments

The City of Avondale is seeking a passionate and driven college student to join the Engineering Department. This internship is designed to expose engineering students to careers in local government and educate them about the many facets of a full-service engineering department in a local municipality. Learning Opportunities: Gain first-hand experience working in a full-service engineering department.

Learn how public feedback shapes local policy and funding programs. Learn how to build trust between municipalities and the community. Work with professionals across city departments.

Build a strong portfolio piece through the creation and implementation of a citywide program. Essential Functions Maintains records in an organized manner and in accordance with department rules and policies. Organizes engineering records for archiving and creates maps and spreadsheets.

Performs research for special projects; collects information on operational and administrative problems; and conducts analysis. Assists in the office or out in the field with various traffic or civil engineering projects. Provides management with daily updates on project and assignment status.

Supports team members of various departments and divisions within the City. Attends related training sessions and various administrative meetings. Prepares, revises, and maintains forms, records, reports, maps, spreadsheets, and other project-related documents.

Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Must be currently enrolled at an accredited community college or four-year college/university.

No direct local government experience is required for this position. Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire. Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
