What is a temporary engineer?

Temporary engineers are professionals who are hired for a fixed duration or to complete specific projects within an organization. They typically fill short-term needs, such as covering staff absences, managing increased workloads, or contributing specialized expertise to projects. Temporary engineers may work through staffing agencies or be directly contracted by companies. Their roles and responsibilities are similar to permanent engineers, but their employment is limited to the duration of the contract. This arrangement offers flexibility for both the employer and the engineer.

What are temporary jobs for an engineer?

Temporary jobs for an engineer include mechanical and manufacturing roles in a variety of industries. In these jobs, you work for a company with temporary staffing needs. Job duties can vary widely, and many companies hire temporary engineers to work on short-term projects. As a temporary engineer, you may operate equipment, oversee manufacturing operations, and handle other duties as necessary. You typically work with teams to carry out design goals and meet deadlines. Other responsibilities include supervising project management tasks as well as teams of employees to fulfill organizational needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Engineer, you generally need a relevant engineering degree, technical proficiency in your discipline, and prior hands-on experience in similar roles. Familiarity with industry-specific software (such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or MATLAB), safety protocols, and any required certifications like EIT or PE is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, adaptability, and effective communication skills help temporary engineers quickly integrate into new teams and projects. These skills and qualifications are important because they enable engineers to contribute immediately and effectively in short-term assignments, ensuring project continuity and quality.

What are some common challenges temporary engineers face when adapting to new projects or teams?

Temporary Engineers often move between projects and organizations, which means they must quickly acclimate to varying workflows, technologies, and team cultures. One common challenge is understanding project-specific procedures and expectations in a short timeframe. Additionally, building rapport with permanent team members can take extra effort, but a proactive approach and open communication help smooth the transition. Adapting quickly and demonstrating flexibility are key to succeeding in these dynamic environments.

Job description

Description
Your role at GEI.
GEI is seeking an experienced structural engineer to join our dams and water resources consulting practice. Dams, reservoirs, hydroelectric developments, and other water resources facilities are crucial components of our nation's infrastructure, providing clean energy, water supply, and flood control. GEI serves public and private clients operating some of the largest and most interesting water resources projects in the world. Our roles include designing new facilities, upgrading existing developments, evaluating safety, and assessing risks. As part of GEI's dams and water resources practice, you will work with the leading experts in dams and dam safety at one of the premier firms in the industry.
This position can be filled in our Woburn or Franklin (MA), Bedford (NH), Portland (ME), or Ithaca (NY) offices, with an expectation of about three days a week in-office (i.e., about two days remote). Dams in our clients' portfolios are in some of the most spectacularly scenic parts of the country, including the Connecticut River Valley in Vermont and New Hampshire, the lakes of central Maine, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. Work will occasionally require the ability and willingness to hike moderate distances (5+ miles), traverse steep terrain, climb ladders, enter narrow galleries, and access remote sites by off-road vehicle and helicopter.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
  • Serve as structural lead, and/or project/task manager.
  • Oversee and review designs developed by staff engineers. Mentor and promote technical development of staff engineers.
  • Analyze new and existing concrete gravity dams, arch dams, buttress dams, spillways, powerhouses, intake towers, penstocks, dam gates, and similar structures for stresses, stability, and performance under extreme loads.
  • Analyze and design other facilities as needed, including foundations, retaining walls, temporary works, and special structures.
  • Develop and evaluate alternatives for new facilities and upgrades to existing projects.
  • Complete detailed design calculations and prepare contract documents and technical specifications.
  • Inspect ongoing dam and water resources construction projects for conformance with design requirements.
  • Inspect existing projects as part of regulatory compliance programs (e.g., FERC Part 12D).
  • Participate in semi-quantitative risk analysis workshops.
  • Prepare formal written reports, give presentations, and participate in internal and client meetings.
  • Prepare scopes of work, budgets, and schedules.

Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering from an accredited program.
  • 7 to 15+ years' experience in structural engineering related to dams and water resources structures.
  • Professional Engineer licensure or the ability to obtain licensure within one year of hire.
  • Experience with structural analysis software (SAP2000/STAAD/RISA/ANSYS, etc.) and AutoCAD.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to travel on temporary assignments.
  • Willingness and ability to work in the field and in inclement weather.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience managing multi-discipline design projects.
  • Experience in analysis and design of hydraulic structures.
  • M.S. in Structural Engineering.
  • Experience with Revit modeling or BIM.
  • Structural Engineer licensure.
