What is a temporary embedded Linux engineer?

A Temporary Embedded Linux Engineer is a professional hired on a short-term basis to design, develop, and troubleshoot software that runs on embedded Linux systems. These engineers typically work on devices like routers, IoT gadgets, automotive systems, or industrial equipment, focusing on integrating Linux-based operating systems with hardware. Temporary roles often involve project-based assignments, such as updating firmware, optimizing system performance, or addressing security vulnerabilities. Their expertise ensures that embedded devices operate efficiently and reliably within the constraints of limited resources. Companies usually hire temporary embedded Linux engineers to meet project deadlines or fill in for permanent staff.

What is the difference between Temporary Embedded Linux vs Embedded Linux Engineer?

AspectTemporary Embedded LinuxEmbedded Linux Engineer
CredentialsTypically no formal certification required; may have short-term trainingOften requires a degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, with certifications like Linux Foundation certifications

Job description

Systems Engineer

The Systems Engineer will support the development, modification, and integration of complex systems and subsystems, with a strong focus on functional analysis, empirical evaluation, requirements decomposition, and system‑level validation. This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy working across hardware, software, and integration environments and who thrive in structured, mission‑critical defense programs.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct functional and empirical analysis to support the design, development, and implementation of hardware, systems, and subsystems.
  • Perform requirements analysis using tools such as DOORS, Doors Next, or JAZZ, ensuring traceability and clarity across system components.
  • Decompose top‑level requirements into actionable subsystem and component‑level requirements, supporting both hardware and software teams.
  • Execute system integration and testing, validating system behavior, identifying discrepancies, and supporting root‑cause analysis.
  • Perform systems‑level troubleshooting and debugging during validation and test phases, collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Utilize MATLAB for modeling, simulation, and data analysis to evaluate system performance and support design decisions.
  • Apply strong Linux knowledge to support integration, testing, scripting, and system‑level diagnostics.
  • Document test procedures, verification results, analysis findings, and technical recommendations in a clear and structured format.
  • Participate in technical reviews, requirement walkthroughs, and design discussions to ensure system reliability, safety, and compliance.
  • Support continuous improvement of tools, processes, and methodologies related to requirements analysis, integration, and test.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 2–7 years of experience in systems engineering, including requirements analysis, data analytics, integration, and test.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB for modeling, simulation, and data analysis.
  • Hands‑on experience with requirements management tools such as DOORS, Doors Next, or JAZZ.
  • Strong working knowledge of Linux for system integration, testing, and command‑line operations.
  • Ability to obtain — or already possess — an Active DoD Secret Clearance.
Preferred Experience
  • Exposure to real‑time operating systems or embedded software environments.
  • Familiarity with Agile tools such as JIRA for tracking requirements and development tasks.
  • Experience validating message‑based systems, pub/sub architectures, or distributed system behavior.
  • Understanding of system verification methods, test planning, and structured documentation practices.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills for cross‑functional collaboration.
Work Environment

This position offers a stable, long‑term engineering environment supporting mission‑critical defense programs. Engineers benefit from:

  • PTO flexibility
  • A 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off
  • A collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering culture
  • Exposure to advanced systems across mission assurance, command and control, displays, and weapons control product lines

Work is primarily desk‑based, with periodic visits to laboratory environments for integration and testing activities.
