Job description


JOB SUMMARYPerforms semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and repair work on highways, drainage structures, and streams. Assists with snow removal and minimal landscaping.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A valid Driver's License accepted by the State of Utah is required at the time of hire. A valid Driver's License issued by the State of Utah must be obtained within six (6) months of hire to operate a County vehicle.
Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of hire OR obtain the Class B CDL within thirty (30) days of hire date to operate a Salt Lake County vehicle.
Must possess a current Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Medical Card at the time of hire.
Must attend flagging training and recertify every two (2) years.
Must attend a Defensive Driving course.
Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post-accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Removes snow from roadways.
  • Operates some small and heavy equipment.
  • Maintains tools and equipment by keeping them clean, repaired, and stored securely when not in use; performs minor repairs.
  • Complies with OSHA and/or MUTCD safety rules and regulations.

Flood Control
  • Maintains stream channels, storm drains, flood gates, and other drainage structures by clearing debris and excess sediment.
  • Sets up traffic warning signs, traffic cones, and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Trims trees and bushes; hauls away debris.
  • Fills and places sandbags and installs and operates water pumps.
  • Removes ice-jams from creeks and streams.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA)
Knowledge of:
  • Methods, materials, and equipment necessary to perform flood control construction, landscaping, maintenance/repair, and snow removal work
  • Equipment operating principles and procedures
  • Hazards and safety precautions common to highway/flood control construction, landscaping, maintenance/repair, and snow removal work
  • Pertinent OSHA and/or MUTCD safety rules and regulations
  • Salt Lake County geography

Skills and Abilities to:
  • Operate a light truck (pick-up) or sedan, bob-tail truck, 10-wheeler dump truck, sander unit, snow-plow unit, chipper, mowing machine
  • Use standard and specialized tools and materials common to several trades
  • Follow verbal and written procedures and instructions
  • Perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions
  • Prepare daily records of work performed
  • Keep in compliance with and follow standard practices and procedures common to flood control construction, landscaping, maintenance/repair, and snow removal work
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments/divisions, and the public

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires extensive physical labor (approximately 90% of the time) including but not restricted to: lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, standing, walking on uneven ground, and climbing ladders.
Applicants must be able to carry objects over 50 lbs. (occasionally up to 100 lbs. with some assistance). Regular exposure to extreme weather conditions, dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, smoke, and loud noises.
Work is occasionally performed in confined spaces and at heights up to three (3) stories.
Employees are exposed to high volumes of traffic while performing Flood Control work.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION
This position is subject to being called to work before or after the scheduled shift.
In an emergency event or an officially declared State of Emergency, respond as directed to ensure the restoration of essential public services, flood control facilities, and infrastructure.
