What is a temporary document review?

A Temporary Document Review job involves reviewing and analyzing documents, often as part of legal proceedings such as litigation, regulatory investigations, or compliance audits. Professionals in these roles, usually attorneys or paralegals, assess documents for relevance, confidentiality, and privilege, often using specialized software. These positions are typically project-based and last for a limited period, depending on the size and scope of the case. Temporary document review is common in law firms and legal services companies, especially during large-scale legal matters.

What skills and qualifications are needed for temporary document review?

To thrive as a Temporary Document Review professional, you need strong attention to detail, critical reading skills, and a relevant degree such as a JD or paralegal certification. Familiarity with e-discovery platforms like Relativity, Concordance, or similar document management systems is typically required. Excellent organizational skills, time management, and the ability to work efficiently in a team setting are essential soft skills. These abilities ensure accurate, efficient review of large volumes of documents and help maintain the integrity and pace of legal proceedings.

What are common challenges in temporary document review and how can they be managed?

Temporary document review roles often involve reviewing large volumes of documents under tight deadlines, which can be mentally demanding. Reviewers may encounter complex legal terminology and need to quickly adapt to different review platforms or protocols set by each client. Staying organized, asking clarifying questions early, and using available training materials can help manage these challenges. Additionally, effective communication with team leads and collaborating with other reviewers ensures consistency and efficiency throughout the project.

What is the difference between Temporary Document Review vs Contract Paralegal?

Temporary Document Review roles focus on short-term, project-based review of legal documents, often during litigation or due diligence. Contract Paralegals handle more comprehensive legal tasks, including document management, drafting, and ongoing legal support. While both roles require legal knowledge and certification, Temporary Document Review is typically more task-specific and temporary, whereas Contract Paralegals have broader responsibilities within legal teams.
