What is a temporary designer?

Temporary designers are creative professionals hired on a short-term basis to assist with design projects or fill staffing gaps. They may work for a company, agency, or as freelancers, and their contracts usually last for a specific period or until a project is completed. Temporary designers can specialize in various fields such as graphic design, web design, or product design. Companies often hire them to manage workload spikes, cover employee absences, or bring in specialized expertise. This flexible employment arrangement benefits both employers needing immediate talent and designers seeking diverse experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Designer, you need a solid background in design principles, proficiency in graphic design software, and a relevant degree or portfolio demonstrating your abilities. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and sometimes basic web design platforms is typically required. Strong time management, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for excelling in short-term or project-based roles. These skills ensure you can quickly integrate into new teams, deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines, and meet diverse client needs.

What are some typical challenges faced by temporary designers, and how can they overcome them?

Temporary designers often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to new company cultures, workflows, and expectations. Since assignments may be short-term, building strong relationships and understanding project goals swiftly is essential. Being proactive in communication, asking clarifying questions, and leveraging previous industry experience can help temporary designers integrate seamlessly and contribute effectively. Maintaining a flexible mindset and staying organized are also key to thriving in temporary roles.

Job Description

This role offers the opportunity to work as an Architectural Designer within an integrated design-build firm that specializes in private healthcare practices. You will contribute across the full project lifecycle, from early visioning and conceptual design through detailed architectural documentation and construction support. The position combines hands-on design, technical detailing, and active collaboration with interior design, construction, and project technical teams. You will help shape healthcare environments, gain broad exposure to all project phases, and work closely with leadership in a boutique setting that values ownership, growth, and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of construction documents and detailed project drawings that clearly communicate design intent and technical requirements
  • Collaborate across groups, contributing to both technical construction issues and design discussions to ensure cohesive project delivery
  • Attend client meetings, review early space plans, and provide constructive design suggestions and feedback to the design team
  • Review technical construction drawings and coordinate closely with engineering consultants to align architectural and engineering solutions
  • Research products and building systems that support and enhance the design intent, particularly within healthcare environments
  • Develop plans, elevations, and architectural details that clearly illustrate design concepts and the use of materials
  • Produce construction documents and specifications that ensure alignment with the approved design intent and project requirements
  • During the construction phase, lead document revisions such as addenda, bulletins, and clarification sketches to address field conditions and questions
  • Review subcontractor submissions to verify compliance with the design intent and project documentation
  • Review production shop drawings for furniture, millwork, and equipment as needed to ensure consistency with the design
  • Attend job site meetings during construction on an as-needed basis to review construction elements and furnishing placement for compliance with approved documents
  • Participate in punch list processes as needed, helping to identify, document, and follow up on items requiring correction or completion

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or a closely related field
  • 4+ years of experience working in an architecture firm
  • Proficiency in Revit; working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is a plus
  • Experience or interest in healthcare-focused design and construction
