Job description

Job Summary:
Under the direction of the security supervisor, protects the life and property of all persons on Baystate Health property. As the only level-one Trauma Center in Western Mass, we deal with numerous criminal traumas in the Emergency Department and inpatient units. We also see many behavioral health and dual-diagnosis patients in our facility. We are often called upon to provide 1:1 watches on any of the above patients as requested. Will take the lead role in responding to various incidents around the campus. Each region in our system has its own set of challenges with aggression, opioid abuse, and behavioral health. There is a significant need for statutory authority in our environment, which this position will address. Under the direction of the Security Manager in Springfield, patrols the interior and exterior of facilities and acts to deter loss of property and belongings to employees, patients, and visitors by preventing illegal entry by unauthorized individuals. Knowledge of policy procedures and certified as a Municipal Police officer through MPTC. It enforces the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, depending on location, and will be sworn in the city or town where they are assigned. Will follow all rules and regulations of the MPTC and POST program related to reporting use of force actions in their role as a Certified Police Officer. Will respond to all calls for assistance. Monitors surveillance cameras and reports and investigates any suspicious activity. In doing so, it examines doors and windows to ensure they are secured and checks and maintains the security of hospital vehicles. Monitors fire and security alarms as well as dispatching calls for assistance.
Escorts employees and visitors as necessary. Assists in traffic control for fires as well as other emergencies. The officer's primary assignment will be in the Emergency Department to respond to different locations as needed.
Job Responsibilities:
1) Will be assigned to the Emergency Department and patrol treatment area, triage, and waiting room to support staff in the care of patients. They will look for and address any aggressive or disruptive individuals they encounter. They will work collaboratively with the triage nurse and team and take a lead role in responding to any incident.
2) Enforces the access control program. Issues visitor badges by the policy. Explains access denials clearly, following policy guidelines. Identifies persons without identification in all areas of Baystate Health facilities. Ensures doors within the patrol area are secured/opened at the correct times and completes unsecured door reports. Documents inspection of high-risk areas. Takes immediate action to correct security/safety problems. Conducts building rounds to ensure that doors/windows are securely locked. Responds to requests to lock and unlock doors and secure doors according to specified schedules
3) Will have a working knowledge of all duties of the dispatch center.
4) Responds to codes and other emergencies immediately as directed by the supervisor. Operates fire equipment according to safety policies. Has a working knowledge of emergency response plans and assists the supervisor in setting up the emergency operations center (EOC) and staffs the EOC as required. Will also notify the Police when appropriate
5) Assists in traffic control. Keeps fire lanes clear of traffic. Provides direction to visitors on parking and patient pick-up areas. Follows procedures for enforcing parking rules and completes reports. Controls vehicle traffic in and around the institution to prevent congestion. The officer will also screen parking gates periodically as part of the parking enforcement plan.
6) Maintain knowledge of arrest procedures and police powers regarding security assignments. Detain or arrest individuals suspected of committing a crime in or around hospital premises as mandated by Mass General Laws and file accurate reports by the end of the shift. Will need to maintain Police certification by attending all required in-service requirements of the MPTC.
7) Handles disruptive situations.
Understands policy on the use of force. Employs proven crisis intervention techniques where possible and understands restraint protocols. Works with other departments to provide a team approach to solving disruptive incidents.
8) Conducts preliminary investigations.
Collects all required preliminary information at the incident scene, including personal data, property data, relevant times, and circumstances. Renders a report promptly. Conducts complete investigations on lost and found property cases. Checks all repositories nursing units and shows the ability to trace patient progress through the facility
9) Performs special assignments.
Controls the movements of patients identified by the medical staff as at risk. Provides temporary support to clinics, offices, or other areas as required. Performs mobile patrols. Provide emergency transport of persons, records, and specimens. Provides security for special events
10) Provides escorts.
Ensures timely and safe escort to employees and others within the medical facility. Will provide escorts for Behavioral Patients and Criminal Traumas or others as requested by the care team. Performs patient watches in the Emergency Department and on inpatient units occasionally and upon request
11) Demonstrates and models principles of service excellence in support of the patient /employee experience.
12) Photo ID System- has working knowledge on ID system to create, reprint ID badges, encode, and provide door access as required in Premisys System.
13) Demonstrates professionalism when directing employees, staff, visitors, and patients to all hospital areas as requested. Assist above as needed.
14) Conduct guest and staff screenings, following established safety protocols. Operate weapons detection equipment according to manufacterer guidelines and organizational protocols. Conduct visual inspections of bags, personal items, and equipment required. Identify prohibited items and follow established procedures to resolve alerts safely and efficiently. Maintain awareness of behavioral indicators that may signal potential safety risks.
15) Has a working knowledge of the Security Operations center SOC
Minimally Required Experience
  • Customer service background and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • High School/GED diploma

Preferred Required Experience:
  • 2-4 Years in security, law enforcement, or military police field. They should possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and sound reasoning and decision-making abilities.
  • If no security-related experience, an associate or bachelor's degree in a related field may be considered in lieu of experience

Skills/Competencies:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, report writing skills, and good customer service/communication skills. Utilize computer systems to document work activity and to assist visitors in determining where patients are located.
  • Maintain annual certification requirements put forth by MPTC/POST.

Licenses:
  • Valid Driver's License - Position subject to additional requirements (BH-HR-902 Fleet Policy)

Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.
