• Work Schedule: 2 hours per week (Tuesday, Wednesdays, OR Thursday, 3:30pm-5:30pm)
• Pay Type: $75 an hour
• Type: Part-Time, Temporary, non-exempt
• Dates: October 5, 2026 – May 2027, with possibility of renewal for 2027 school year

Job Summary:

Abrons Arts Center’s Education Department is seeking a visual arts educator with experience writing and illustrating graphic novels, developing original characters, and working professionally in the comics industry for a partnership between Abrons Arts Center, Boys & Girls Republic, and Marvel. This partnership, a weekly Comic Book Club held at Boys & Girls Republic at 888 East 6th Street in New York City, will serve students in grades 4–8. We are seeking an educator who brings both professional industry experience and a strong background in teaching and working with young people.

This program honors the legacy of Jack Kirby, who attended Boys & Girls Republic as a young person and drew inspiration from his experiences in the Lower East Side when creating the stories that shaped the Marvel Universe. Through the visual language of comics, students will explore the history of the Lower East Side and the art form of comic books through the lens of Kirby’s life and work. They will be invited to use comics as a tool for exploring and sharing their own stories, identities, and experiences.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate (2) 1-hour long weekly Comic Book Club sessions on-site at Boys & Girls Republic.
• Create lesson plans with age-appropriate activities that teach illustration, writing, character design, and other skills needed for the graphic novel medium for 4th-8th grade students.
• Collaborate with Abrons staff to plan and facilitate field trips and other out-of-classroom experiences.
• Submit timesheets, attendance, lesson plans, supply lists, and other administrative documents to Abrons staff in a timely manner.
• Create an engaging, supportive, and inclusive environment for learners.

Requirements

• Must have a High School Diploma/HSE.
• Experience facilitating, adapting, & modifying arts lessons for young people from a range of backgrounds and with diverse learning styles.
• Strong classroom management skills and an ability to build meaningful connections with young people.
• Experience and art practice in comics, graphic novels, character design, and/or illustration.
• Strong commitment to accessibility, equity, and inclusion.
• Ability to work collaboratively with Abrons staff and community partners.
• Interest in graphic novels, comic books, and the life and work of Jack Kirby is a plus!
