NACE Coating Inspector
The NACE Coating Inspector is responsible for inspecting, evaluating, and documenting surface preparation and application of protective coatings to ensure compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and client requirements. This role plays a critical part in maintaining quality control, preventing corrosion, and extending the lifecycle of industrial assets.
Key Responsibilities
Inspection & Quality Control
  • Perform inspections of surface preparation, coating applications, and final finishes in accordance with:

    • NACE (AMPP) standards
    • SSPC standards
    • Project specifications and client requirements

  • Verify environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, dew point) prior to and during coating operations
  • Conduct tests including:

    • Surface profile measurements
    • Chloride/contamination testing
    • Dry Film Thickness (DFT)
    • Wet Film Thickness (WFT)
    • Adhesion testing (pull-off testing where required)

Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain accurate and detailed inspection reports, logs, and daily activity reports
  • Document non-conformance issues and coordinate corrective actions
  • Review contractor submittals, coating procedures, and inspection test plans (ITPs)
  • Submit final inspection reports and quality documentation for project turnover

Compliance & Standards
  • Ensure compliance with:

    • OSHA safety standards
    • Austin Industries safety policies
    • Client-specific requirements

  • Verify that coatings are applied within manufacturer recommendations
  • Monitor contractor adherence to approved processes and procedures

Coordination & Communication
  • Work closely with project management, field supervisors, and client representatives
  • Provide technical guidance to coating crews regarding application issues and quality expectations
  • Attend pre-job meetings, safety briefings, and quality reviews

Safety Responsibilities
  • Promote and actively participate in Austin Industries' safety culture
  • Identify and report potential hazards or unsafe conditions
  • Ensure all coating activities are conducted safely, especially in confined spaces or elevated work areas

Required Qualifications
  • Current NACE (AMPP) Coating Inspector Level I or II Certification (Level II preferred)
  • High school diploma or GED (Associate degree or technical training preferred)
  • Minimum 3-5 years of coating inspection experience in industrial or petrochemical environments
  • Strong knowledge of:

    • Protective coatings systems
    • Surface preparation methods (blasting, power tools, etc.)
    • Industrial painting standards

Preferred Qualifications
  • NACE Level III certification (highly desirable for senior roles)
  • SSPC certifications or equivalent industry credentials
  • Experience in refineries, chemical plants, or power generation facilities
  • Familiarity with quality management systems (ISO 9001)

Technical Skills
  • Proficient with coating inspection instruments:

    • DFT gauges
    • Psychrometers
    • Surface profile comparators

  • Ability to read and interpret:

    • Blueprints
    • P&IDs
    • Coating specifications

  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, reporting systems)

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in industrial environments including:

    • Elevated structures
    • Confined spaces
    • Outdoor conditions (heat, humidity, rain)

  • Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Prolonged standing, walking, climbing, and bending

Work Schedule
  • Project-based schedule; may include:

    • Overtime
    • Weekend work
    • Travel or temporary assignments
