Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Transportation is now hiring summer temporary maintenance workers! Whether you're looking for temporary work for extra income through the summer months or looking to test out a new position prior to making a long-term commitment, we encourage you to apply! Pay rate of $19.941 per hour to start. If utilized by the Agency, and at the discretion of the District, those who currently possess a CDL may be promoted to the Worker Senior level at the rate of $21.470 per hour.
Locations hiring: Ainsworth, Valentine, and O'Neill. Summer positions, temporary, until November 30, 2026. Hours may depend on the weather, may be more or less than 40 hours per week.

Job Duties:

Under immediate supervision, perform a variety of manual tasks to maintain and preserve highways, shoulders, roadside areas, and structures, as well as preventative maintenance and care of equipment and tools. Examples of work include mowing and trimming vegetation on highway right-of-way, trash and roadway debris cleanup, assist the crew with concrete and asphalt pavement repair, setting up and maintaining traffic control devices, flagging, guardrail repair work, cleaning out culverts and other drainage structures, cleaning and maintaining equipment, tools, and facilities as needed, and perform other duties as assigned.


Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Highway Maintenance Worker: Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license.

Highway Maintenance Worker/ Senior: Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license, and possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and tanker endorsements is required within 60 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: A valid Class A or B Commercial driver's license. Experience in the operation of heavy equipment. May require out of town, overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is also required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must be able to safely move, drag, lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance), and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance); climb, bend or stoop; work in outdoor temperature extremes and work around high-speed traffic. Must be able to be reached to report to work outside scheduled work hours for highway emergencies within 45 minutes of notification.
