What is a temporary Cal Fire?

Temporary Cal Fire positions refer to seasonal or limited-term jobs with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). These roles are typically filled during peak wildfire seasons and include positions such as Firefighter I, forestry aides, and support staff. Temporary employees assist with fire prevention, suppression, and emergency response efforts across California. The duration of these jobs can range from a few months to up to nine months, depending on fire activity and funding. These positions are a great way to gain experience in wildfire management and can sometimes lead to permanent employment with Cal Fire.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a temporary Cal Fire firefighter?

To thrive as a Temporary Cal Fire firefighter, you need physical fitness, wildfire suppression knowledge, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with firefighting equipment, two-way radios, and completion of basic wildland fire training (such as S-130/S-190) are usually required. Teamwork, quick decision-making, and resilience under pressure are important soft skills for success in emergency situations. These abilities ensure effective, safe responses to wildfires and protect both lives and property in challenging conditions.
