Associated Students of San Diego State University Department: Aztec RecreationPosition Title: Sports Club Assistant Coach: Dance Team GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the AS/SDSU Competitive Sports Coordinator, the Assistant Coach for the Dance Team will be responsible for aiding with the coordination and operations of the San Diego State University Dance Team. The Assistant Coach will assist with designing and implementation of practice schedules and training schemes; member recruitment, auditions, and retention; coordination and submission of competition entries; and achieving the enhancement of team skill performance. This position requires availability for evening and weekend hours. The Assistant Coach is responsible for the enforcement of rules, policies, and procedures as outlined in the Sport Club Handbook as well as all duties associated with coaching a collegiate club program. The successful candidate will be expected to enforce and comply with all policies and procedures established by Associated Students/SDSU, the Sport Club Program, United Dance Association (UDA), and the United Spirit Association (USA) while serving as a positive role model for the program and SDSU. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESPrimary FunctionsComply with all job expectations as outlined in the Associated Students/SDSU Sport Club Coaching AgreementEnsure individual and program compliance with all policies and procedures of Associated Students/SDSU, Aztec Recreation, and SDSU AthleticsEnsure safety of all team members, assistant coaches, and equipment is the top priority at all times Attend or be represented at all meetings scheduled by San Diego State Athletics, Band, or Sports ClubAssist team members in achieving fundraising goalsAssist with the coordination of travel arrangementsSupervise team members and assume responsibility for their conduct at team functionsWork collaboratively with team officers and administrators to develop and achieve program priorities Assist with assessing team members' performance level for placement in competition routines Maintain team's positive community standing Assist in the outreach to alumni to recruit support for the teamRepresent the team in regional or national meetings with other coaches or organizationsPerforms other duties as assignedCustomer Service and CollaborationEstablishes and maintains working relationships with various A.S. and University departmentsRepresents the team and Associated Students/SDSU in a professional manner at all timesMaintains positive and effective working relationships with all athletes and staffSafetyEnsures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policiesAdheres to Associated Students' Code of Safe PracticesReports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence Ensures completion proper documentation is completed for each accident (employee and/or non-employee) and forwards to supervisorReports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediatelyQUALIFICATIONSMinimum & Preferred RequirementsEducation:Bachelor's Degree preferredExperience:Proficient knowledge of Aztec Recreation programs, facilities, and policies requiredKnowledge Microsoft applications and Aztec Recreation website requiredKnowledge and/or participation of Aztec Recreation programs and facilities preferredLicense & Certification:American Red Cross First AID and CPR/AED certifications requiredValid California Drivers' License and proof of automobile insurance are requiredTrainings:Must complete Gender Awareness, Sexual Harassment Prevention, and Workplace Violence Prevention training within 30 days of hireMust complete a Defensive Driving CourseAttend all mandatory Aztec Recreation/Sport Club Staff meetings and trainings as directedPERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONSMust be able to work with confidential items and understand the importance of confidentiality in project workMust be capable of maintaining positive working relationships with staff and athletesMust be able to exercise tact and exhibit sound professional judgmentMust be able to work well with different work stylesStrong organizational skills requiredMust be able to follow oral and written directions and follow projects through to completionCommitment to adhere to all the policies, rules, and regulations of Associated Students/SDSU, Aztec Recreation and sport leaguesKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIESDemonstrated commitment to student success and ability to recruit, train, and evaluate collegiate student athletesHave a strong coaching background with an emphasis on skill development and leadershipExcellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with student athletes, team officers, coaches, administrators and alumniExcellent written and oral communication skillsAbility to handle difficult situations involving participants with patience, good judgment, and with diplomacy is expectedSCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONSThis is a part-time hourly position. Flexibility and willingness to work up to 25 hours per week.
