Job description

Brief Summary:
Provides preventive dental services and dental health education.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Essential Job Functions:
Obtains and records medical and dental histories.
Examines teeth and periodontium for abnormalities of the mouth.
Completes oral prophylaxis, removes Supra and Sub gingival accretions from the teeth.
Provides root planning and gingival curettage under the direction of the dentist.
Administers local anesthetic.
Provides oral hygiene instruction, tooth brushing instruction, flossing instruction and other dental aides as needed.
Provides dental health education to patients and staff.
Coordinates and presents dental education at North Slope Borough Schools, Career Fairs, and Health Fairs and for other community organizations or events as might be appropriate.
Administer fluoride treatments, trays, varnish and rinse.
Applies sealants.
Coordinates sealant clinics and other prevention programing.
Exposes and develops dental x-ray films, periapical, occlusal and panoramic films.
Places, smooths, polishes and re-contours temporary and sedative dental restorations.
Places antimicrobials and antibiotic chips into the gingival sulcus.
Provides chair side assistance when necessary.
Travels to villages to provide dental hygiene and preventative services, and dental education.
Keeps inventory of all dental hygiene supplies and instruments.
Maintain recall system in Barrow.
Assists in Preparation of Public Health Services announcements.
Partake in radio programs with Dental Director or other dental staff as indicated.
Maintain bulletin board(s) with oral health related topics in villages and/or at schools.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:
Graduate from an accredited U.S. dental hygiene program.
Two or more years of Dental hygiene work experience strongly preferred.
Certification/Licensure:
Unrestricted State Dental Hygiene license required from any US State (Alaska license preferred).
Unrestricted State Local Anesthetic License from any US State (Alaska license preferred).
Nitrous Oxide Certificate/License Endorsement if indicated by state licensing authority, preferred.
Restorative Function Endorsement preferred.
Current CPR/BLS.
