What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temp Web Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temp Web Developer, you need proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a solid understanding of responsive design, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, content management systems (CMS), and frameworks such as React or Angular is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication help you quickly integrate into new teams and manage shifting project priorities. These skills ensure you can deliver high-quality, maintainable web solutions efficiently in a dynamic, short-term work environment.

What types of projects can a Temp Web Developer expect to work on, and how does the temporary nature of the role impact daily responsibilities?

As a Temp Web Developer, you'll often be brought in to support specific projects such as website launches, redesigns, or troubleshooting tasks that require additional short-term expertise. The temporary nature of the position means your assignments are typically well-defined and deadline-driven, so you’ll need to quickly adapt to existing workflows and collaborate with permanent team members. You may be responsible for coding, debugging, updating content, or integrating new features, and clear communication is essential to ensure a smooth handover when your contract ends. This dynamic can provide exposure to a range of technologies and business processes in a relatively short time.

What are temp web developers?

Temp web developers are technology professionals hired on a temporary basis to create, update, or maintain websites and web applications. They may work as contractors, freelancers, or through staffing agencies, and are typically brought on to help with specific projects, peak workloads, or to cover staff absences. Temp web developers possess the same technical skills as permanent web developers, such as coding in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other web technologies, but their assignments are usually limited in duration. They offer flexibility to employers who need web development expertise without committing to a full-time hire.

With 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, TEGNA reaches more than 100 million people monthly across the web, mobile apps, streaming, and linear television. Together, we are building a sustainable future for local news.
We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Senior BI/Tableau Report Developer to join our data team, specializing in the Media and Entertainment industry. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience developing advanced, performance-optimized Tableau solutions. This role is crucial for transforming complex media data-including audience consumption, advertising performance, content performance, and subscription metrics-into clear, actionable dashboards that drive content, distribution, and revenue strategies. You will be a technical leader, setting visualization standards and providing mentorship across the analytics function.
Responsibilities
  • Media Data Visualization Leadership:
  • Lead the entire lifecycle (design, development, testing, and deployment) of complex Tableau dashboards, focusing on key media metrics like subscriber churn, ad impressions, video views, content watch time, audience demographics, and campaign ROI.
  • Translate advanced analytical models (e.g., attribution, predictive content scoring) into intuitive, high-impact visualizations for executive and operational users.
  • Establish best-in-class visualization standards tailored for media data consumption, ensuring accurate and compliant reporting (e.g., Nielsen standards, privacy compliance).

Data Strategy & Technical Excellence:
  • Utilize 10+ years of BI experience to architect scalable and highly efficient Tableau data sources, optimizing for query performance against large datasets from various media platforms.
  • Collaborate extensively with Data Engineers and Scientists to define and refine data models (e.g., star schemas in Snowflake, AWS Redshift, or Google BigQuery) to ensure optimal structure for media reporting.
  • Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for advanced Tableau functionalities, including complex LOD expressions, sophisticated data blending, dynamic parameters, and performance tuning for 100+ million row datasets.
  • Stakeholder Management & Mentorship:
  • Partner directly with Advertising Sales, Marketing, Content Strategy, and Finance teams to elicit and document precise reporting requirements and KPIs.
  • Mentor and guide junior developers on data storytelling, dashboard design principles, SQL optimization, and adherence to BI governance policies.

Requirements:
  • Experience: Minimum of 10+ years of professional experience in Business Intelligence development, with at least 5 years dedicated to Tableau in an enterprise environment.
  • Industry Focus: Deep, demonstrable experience in the Media, Entertainment, Publishing, or Ad-Tech industries, with a strong understanding of core media metrics.
  • Technical Expertise:
  • Expert proficiency in all facets of Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server/Cloud administration and governance.
  • Exceptional command of Advanced SQL for complex data querying, ETL processes, and performance tuning.
  • Proven experience working with large-scale cloud-based data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, Google BigQuery, or AWS Redshift).
  • Expertise in data modeling and designing data structures specifically for BI reporting efficiency.
  • Comfortable with designing, building and supporting a BI Portal environment using Apache tomcat, PHP and JavaScript.
  • Develop Custom BI Applications which work as a wrapper around Tableau Reports using Tableau API
  • Integrate BI Portal with backend AI Agents to facilitate user interaction via text prompts

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certification: Current Tableau Certified Professional or equivalent high-level certification.
  • Ad-Tech Experience: Familiarity with data from major Ad-Tech platforms (e.g., Google Ad Manager, DSPs, SSPs) or audience measurement tools (e.g., Nielsen, Comscore).
  • Programming: Experience with scripting languages like PHP and/or Javascript, Python for data wrangling, Tableau APIs for custom Web BI Portal Development.
