Machine Builder (Automation)

(For quicker response, email resume directly to: crauch@aerotek.com)

Location: Lakewood Ranch, FL

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM

The Technician III is a highly experienced machine builder responsible for the independent assembly, debug, and commissioning of custom automation and packaging machinery from start to finish. This role serves as a technical expert on the manufacturing floor — leading debug efforts, contributing to design reviews, establishing new assembly processes, and mentoring junior technicians. The ideal candidate brings deep hands-on experience with both mechanical and electrical assembly, intermediate fabrication skills, and a working familiarity with industrial controls and automation components.

Responsibilities

  • Independently assemble complete machines from start to finish in accordance with company standards and processes, including electrical panel builds and full field wiring, as well as mechanical station and frame assembly.
  • Read, interpret, and redline 2D/3D mechanical drawings and electrical schematics, providing actionable feedback to the engineering team.
  • Ensure all assemblies are leveled, squared, and built to specification without assistance.
  • Assemble pneumatic, hydraulic, and motion control sub-assemblies, including servo systems, VFDs, and linear actuators.
  • Lead debug efforts on both custom and packaging machines, resolving mechanical, electrical, and controls-related issues independently.
  • Interface with PLC/controls systems at a functional level, including reading ladder logic, jogging axes, interpreting fault codes, and coordinating with controls engineers on resolutions.
  • Perform intermediate fabrication tasks, including manual mill/lathe operations, welding, and plasma cutting, and operate basic fabrication equipment.
  • Actively participate in project design reviews and contribute practical build feedback to the engineering team.
  • Mentor junior technicians by providing guidance on assembly techniques, standards, and best practices.
  • Lead by example in workmanship quality, housekeeping, and adherence to company values.

Essential Skills

  • 6-10 years of hands-on manufacturing experience in a similar custom automation or machine-building environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently assemble complex custom machinery (mechanical and electrical) from start to finish.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting 2D and 3D mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
  • Solid understanding of hand tools, power tools, and job-specific testing equipment.
  • Intermediate fabrication skills, including manual mill/lathe operations, welding, and plasma cutting.
  • Strong attention to detail with a consistent track record of high-quality, accurate work.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, comfortable presenting concerns and solutions to leads and engineers.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and company-specific software and file systems.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Working familiarity with PLC-based control systems (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar), with the ability to read ladder logic, navigate HMIs, and jog axes.
  • Experience with servo drives, VFDs, and motion control hardware.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic system assembly and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with applicable safety standards, including OSHA general industry, NFPA 79 (electrical standard for industrial machinery), and machine guarding requirements.
  • Customer site installation or commissioning experience.
  • Experience participating in machine design reviews or providing build feedback to engineering.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Full benefits package including:
    • Health insurance
    • Vision coverage
    • Dental coverage
  • Steady full-time hours with a consistent weekday schedule
  • Opportunities for growth within a rapidly expanding automation environment
Work Environment
  • Clean, organized shop environment
  • Hands-on, team-oriented culture focused on quality and innovation
  • Exposure to cutting-edge automation and manufacturing technologies
