Job description

Senior Implementation Specialist

Position: Senior Implementation Specialist, Service Delivery Location: Dr, Milpitas, CA Duration: 4 weeks Hours: Standard hours, 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week

Requirements
  • Containers: Kubernetes, Docker, etc.
  • Automation Tools: Grafana, Ansible
  • Cluster Management
  • Open-source data tools: Kafka
  • Cloud Databases: AWS Databases
  • Linux
  • HPC related tools

Core Focus

The residency must be led by an engineer with strong Kubernetes expertise, combined with the ability to validate and monitor a highly sensitive HPC network fabric-without this, the residency cannot succeed regardless of deployment experience. Extended integration testing, workload validation, and operational readiness of the HPC cluster.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform post-deployment integration testing beyond PS baseline tests
  • Validate end-to-end system behavior in real customer environment: Compute ↔ Network ↔ VAST Storage
  • Run extended burn-in tests: Synthetic workloads, Emulators and simulators (quantum workload proxies)
  • Validate sustained performance targets, including: Storage throughput (e.g., ~35 GB/s sustained write/read), Cluster stability under load
  • Execute advanced test suites (e.g., Elbencho, application-level IO tests)
  • Diagnose performance issues across layers: Server (NICs, CPU, memory), Network, Storage (VAST)
  • Perform root-cause analysis and: Engage Dell PS if Dell-side issue, Coordinate with VAST if storage-side issue
  • Support temporary cluster scenarios (flattening, redeploying if required)

A. The customer environment is highly specialized:

• Hybrid HPC environment

• Strong integration with quantum computing systems

• Heavy reliance on high-speed networking (400G NICs)

• Minimal cloud dependency (must operate independently of WS/cloud outages)

B. Customer Environment Characteristics

• Hybrid HC system, not cloud based

• Majority of compute delivered via Kubernetes-orchestrated workloads (core systems)

• Additional systems: Data acquisition nodes, Management and control systems for quantum computing hardware

• Extremely sensitive physical environment: pump systems, vacuum systems, environmental noise, Risk of physical instability affecting networking components (SFPs, ports)

C. Network Fabric is Mission Critical

• Strong emphasis on: network stability not just 'link up', Avoiding packet drops, flapping links, marginal ports

• Specific concerns: Hosts with multiple 400G NICs, Correct subnetting and role base configuration

• Past bad experiences with IT projects due to network issues.

D. Residency Expectations (Network & System) – Network Resident

• Comprehensive network fabric health

• Monitoring of: Switches, ports, and NIC's

• Integration into their observability/monitoring platform

• Acknowledged that: This may fall primarily under a network focused resident, Tasks can be scoped and adjusted during the residency if effort exceeds time.

E. Customer confirmed

• Kubernetes is core to the system

• Lack of Kubernetes experience is a blocking issue for residency

Supporting Critical Needs

  • Kubernetes as the core Platform
  • Residency engineer must: Understand Kubernetes deeply, Support troubleshoot and optimize a Kubernetes driven HPC system This is not optional and not something to learn on the job
  • Network Fabric Confidence & Health
  • Residency must help the customer gain long term confidence in the network stability, and detect marginal ports, packet drops and flapping links
  • Ideally Leave behind: comprehensive fabric health monitoring, and integration with existing observability tools
  • Continuity from Deployment to Operations: Reduce two islands problem, deployment team vs residency team
  • Residency engineer should understand system context, avoid rebuilding knowledge from scratch
  • Reliability in a non-traditional data center: Quantum computing floor has environmental risks not typical of standard DC's
  • Residency mt account for: Physical instability, long-term operation robustness
