Title: Project Design Engineer (Electrical)
Location: New Berlin, WI 53151
Hire Type: Direct Hire
Salary: $90,000 - $110,000

Sterling Engineering is partnering with an industry-leading manufacturer to hire a Project Design Engineer (Electrical). This role is responsible for designing electrical systems for custom industrial equipment from concept through commissioning. The ideal candidate has experience creating and interpreting electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, panel layouts, and interconnect drawings, along with performing electrical calculations for power distribution and control systems. A strong understanding of NEC and UL508A standards is essential. Experience supporting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) is preferred, and PLC programming experience is a plus.
Responsibilities:
  • Design and complete electrical engineering projects while meeting customer and project schedule deadlines.
  • Read, interpret, design, and mark up electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, panel layouts, interconnect drawings, and conduit drawings.
  • Perform electrical calculations including wire sizing, transformer sizing, drive selection, braking resistors, contactors, overload protection, and related power distribution components.
  • Design electrical control panels and custom enclosures in accordance with NEC and UL508A requirements.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to ensure engineering deliverables are completed on time.
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), supporting troubleshooting and problem resolution alongside engineering and field service teams.
  • Assist with commissioning activities and provide technical support during equipment startup.
  • Collaborate with purchasing, manufacturing, and service teams to support successful project execution.
  • Recommend design improvements that enhance product performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in electrical design engineering within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong ability to read and create:
    • Electrical schematics
    • Single-line diagrams
    • Panel layouts
    • Interconnect drawings
    • Conduit drawings
  • Experience performing electrical design calculations for industrial equipment, including wire sizing, transformers, drives, contactors, overload protection, and related components.
  • Working knowledge of NEC electrical code and UL508A standards.
  • Experience supporting FAT, SAT, commissioning, or equipment startup activities.
  • Ability to travel approximately 15% as project needs require.
Preferred Experience:
  • PLC or HMI programming experience (Rockwell or Siemens) is a plus, but not required.
  • AutoCAD Electrical experience is preferred.
  • Heavy industrial equipment or machinery design.
  • Motor controls, drives, transformers, and power distribution systems.
  • Factory or field commissioning experience.
  • Experience designing custom electrical control panels.
