What is the difference between Temp Cloud Network Engineer vs Cloud Network Engineer?

AspectTemp Cloud Network EngineerCloud Network Engineer
CertificationsRelevant certifications like CCNA, CCNP, AWS, AzureSame certifications as Temp role, often more advanced
Work EnvironmentTemporary assignments, project-based, often contract rolesFull-time, permanent positions in cloud and network teams
Employer & IndustryIT consulting firms, cloud service providers, tech companiesSame industries, with a focus on cloud infrastructure
Search & Comparison IntentLooking for temporary cloud networking rolesSeeking permanent or long-term cloud network positions

The Temp Cloud Network Engineer typically works on short-term projects, often through staffing agencies, requiring relevant certifications and experience in cloud networking. In contrast, a Cloud Network Engineer usually holds a permanent role, focusing on designing, implementing, and maintaining cloud network infrastructure within organizations. Both roles demand similar skills and certifications but differ mainly in employment type and job stability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temp Cloud Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temp Cloud Network Engineer, you need a strong understanding of network architecture, cloud computing platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), and relevant networking protocols, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud management tools, virtualization technologies, and certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Cisco CCNA are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with teams and addressing technical issues quickly. These skills and qualities are important to ensure secure, efficient, and scalable network solutions in dynamic cloud environments.

What are some typical projects a Temp Cloud Network Engineer might work on, and how does contract length affect involvement?

Temp Cloud Network Engineers are often brought in to support cloud migrations, set up new virtual networks, or troubleshoot connectivity issues during peak periods or special projects. Because the position is temporary, assignments are usually well-defined and time-sensitive, requiring quick onboarding and effective collaboration with permanent IT and DevOps teams. Contract length can limit involvement in long-term network architecture decisions, but it offers valuable exposure to diverse cloud environments and tools, and the chance to demonstrate expertise for potential future opportunities.

What are Temp Cloud Network Engineers?

Temp Cloud Network Engineers are IT professionals hired on a temporary basis to design, implement, and manage cloud-based network infrastructure. They typically work with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud to ensure secure, scalable, and reliable networks that support business operations. Their responsibilities often include configuring virtual networks, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and optimizing network performance. Companies may hire them for specific projects, seasonal workloads, or to cover staff absences. This role requires strong technical skills, adaptability, and up-to-date knowledge of cloud networking technologies.

Job description

Location & Work Model
• Roseland, NJ - Hybrid (on-site + remote). Long-term contract with right to hire.
Role Overview
• We are seeking a Senior Cloud Network Engineer to design, build, and evolve hybrid cloud networking for a GCP-first enterprise environment. This is a hands-on architecture role blending engineering execution with architectural ownership, supporting large-scale cloud adoption.
Must-Have (Deal-Breakers - screen these first)
1. GCP Networking (non-negotiable) VPC design, Shared VPC, Cloud Interconnect (Dedicated/Partner), Cloud VPN, Cloud Router Multi-region GCP network architecture Watch for: candidates who say "GCP" but only did light IaaS work vs. actual network architecture ownership
2. Advanced Routing Protocols BGP (hands-on config, not just conceptual) OSPF MP-BGP specifically - this is a strong signal of real enterprise/carrier-grade or data center experience, not just cloud admin work
3. Overlay Networking VXLAN / EVPN - this is the biggest filter. Most "cloud network engineers" haven't touched this; it usually means data center/campus fabric background (Cisco ACI, Arista, NSX) prior to cloud. Prioritize candidates coming from DC network architecture roles.
4. Hybrid Connectivity Patterns Site-to-site VPN, Direct Connect (or GCP equivalent), Transit Gateway concepts East-west segmentation / microsegmentation
5. Scale Must show 5,000+ user enterprise environment - reject resumes only showing SMB or single-site work
6. Terraform For automation/IaC - even moderate experience matters since it's explicitly called out under "Automation & Orchestration" Strong Signal / Preferred CCNP/CCIE (this is the single best proxy for deep routing chops - prioritize CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure or Data Center track) CISSP or Arista certs Azure/AWS/OCI exposure (secondary to GCP but shows multi-cloud fluency) Firewall/NAC/proxy/load balancer experience (Palo Alto, F5, Zscaler, etc.) Packet analysis & flow telemetry (Wireshark, NetFlow/sFlow) Legacy-to-cloud modernization project experience - good story-based interview question Soft/Leadership Signals "Technical authority" and "mentor engineers" language in the JD means they want someone who's led a team or been the senior escalation point - look for titles like Principal/Staff/Lead Network Engineer or Network Architect, not just "Senior Engineer" Vendor evaluation experience - suggests budget/strategy involvement, not just execution Sourcing Tip Given the VXLAN/EVPN + MP-BGP + GCP combo, your best candidate pool is likely: Data center network architects who migrated into cloud (Cisco/Arista/Juniper background transitioning to GCP) Telco/service provider network engineers who moved into enterprise cloud NOT typical "cloud engineers" from a DevOps background - they usually lack the deep routing/overlay depth this role wants has context menu
